I want to see this happen again. It’s so common in little league. PLEASE

There are some strategic reasons why you wouldn't want a lefty behind the plate, but I think the main reason you don't see any lefty catchers is any lefty kid with a strong enough arm to be a catcher, coaches make them pitchers well before they get to the bigs.

The highlighter orange around the catchers mitt says it

He was the last left handed catcher in the majors

I remember him... He was more of a back up. That was over 30 years ago...

I’ve always wondered about having a really good LH catcher! It’s a position dominated by RH’s but can be played by either.

I have a rawlings lefty catcher mitt. my dream was to play catcher when I was a kid but nobody told me it was next to impossible 😂 I still use it as a 1B glove in pickup games lmao

Why is it weird for a lefty to play catcher?

what this creater doesn't mention is DeStefano was playing in the Japanese League in 1990 and didn't make a MLB roster until 1992(Houston). He retired after playing the 1993 season for AAA OKC. His time on the Pirate roster was when Pittsburgh was transitioning from Tony Pena to Mike LeVallire as their primary catcher.

Mike Squires was a left handed catcher, also.

I am actually a lefty that is a catcher and I feel bad for him since it’s probably his first time actually behind the plate

This is crazy - small world. I played for Benny's select team when I was young.

He was hot-headed with a strong Brooklyn accent, but the dude knew baseball.

He played 5 years and over 240 games. There has to be some good footage of him with defensive plays.

Can someone please tell me why most catchers are right handed

Yogi Berra and Joe Mauer were both left handed catchers.

With the majority of batters being right handed, batting from the leftsided battersbox, the idea was/is that lefthanded catchers would be hindered in making their throws to the bases way more than righthanded catchers would be. Furthermore, with men on base the catcher's sets up 'closed' to make quicker throws. For a lefthanded catcher that means his view is somewhat turned away from the runner on first, which delays picking up a basestealing runner. Research shows that these assumptions are contradicted by the facts of today's play in MLB. Besides these 'rational' deliberations, there is a number of even more subjective biases against lefthanded

I don't get it. What's wrong with being a lefty catcher
