“The greatest and noblest pleasure which men can have in this world is to discover new truths; and the next is to shake off old prejudices.”

The Old Fritz has gotta be one of the coolest and most interesting people in history. I loved this documentary. It was comprehensive and filled with information, yet it also managed to keep me engaged. This was also the first documentary I've seen from this channel, and now, I go to it to watch biographies about cool historical figures. Thanks People Profiles.

His father had a strong army and he’d use it as a mercenary force to make money instead of gaining territory, so he was a man with a strong army, rich treasury but small territory. “My father was great in small matters, and small in great matters” Frederick later said.

Can you imagine never being good enough for your father, struggling lifelong against detractors and enemies, never quite feeling like you fit in, and then you get old and tired and just want to hang out with your dogs and your memories. I just gained a whole new level of respect. I mean if even huge narcissists like Napoleon and Hitler idolized this man, it says a lot.

Wouldn't that be something if kids rebelled nowadays by learning foreign languages.

Great documentary - I'm running out of them though! Haha. Would love one about Mikhail Gorbachev - I can't find much about him.. Which seems crazy! Also would love to cover more of France in the renaissance! Henri the second.. Just some suggestions from an avid fan! :)

Frederick the Great or Old Fritz is One of My Favorite Historical Figures. I Think My Favorite Thing About Him is That in a Way He Was a Modern Man Despite Living in the 18th Century

Please write the names of the battles in the video as you mention them!

Frederick II of Prussia (Friedrich der Große) was one of the most skilled military strategists of the Modern Era, seconded only by Napoleon Bonaparte, who lived a few decades later. Although he was an absolute monarch, this highly educated prince was, fundamentally, an "enlightened absolutist, " given his tolerance (and encouragement) of "free speech" along with his forbearance on religious practices of non-protestant creeds. Indeed, Frederick was such an extraordinary historical persona, that he deserved his popularly acclaimed name "the Great."

As a military historian, I have admired Frederick's military prowess. He is the best examp;e I know of an enlightened monarch. --Bob Bailey in Maine, USA

I find Frederick to be one of the most interesting people who ever lived! His stock in trade was War, but his passions were art and enlightenment; these attributes combined served the larger purpose of establishing a progressive sovereign nation.

A life lived to the max!

Honestly, the best leader my country has had aside from Bismarck, must've filled Germans/Prussians with so much pride serving under him.
