Frederick’s armies were so good that a captain, who was discharged in 1763 after the treaties, eventually found his way to America - during the Revolutionary War. He helped train Washington’s army in 1777-78 while wintering at Valley Forge. Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben was so effective he was quickly given the rank of Major general in the Continental army, and led troops during the battles of Monmouth Courthouse and at Yorktown.
