Please keep making this kind of content.
I love listening to you talk about things you're passionate about, rather than just drama.
You're intelligent, articulate and speak about this with the respect and nuance it deserves.
Please please keep going

Dr. Timothy Snyder is a Yale history professor who specializes in Ukraine and Poland. "Black Earth" covers the Holodomor. He speaks around the world on this topic, and a number of his lectures are on YouTube.

Thanks for covering this oomp. My grandad fled Ukraine as a teenager during the holodomor and found his way to England via Western Europe. I always asked him when I was a kid about the holodomor but he refused to talk about it as it brought back so many awful memories. After he fled the only contact he had with his family was a letter he was delivered saying his father had been tortured and killed in a gulag for being a pro Ukraine nationalist.

If you're going to cover more serious topics may I suggest Unit 731? It involves the US government and to a lesser extent the Soviet Union covering up Japanese war crimes involving horrific human experiments. The US and the Soviet Union letting its perpetrators off with very light or no sentences at all in exchange for the data collected.

My great grandmother (Matrusya) survived World War and the Holodomor, thanks for this video.

Edit: She told stories of how at night she would walk outside to pick up fallen grain on the road, as well as grass and tree bark. They would boil the grass and tree bark to soften it, then eat it. Those who were caught picking up grain on the ground were imprisoned.

Really grateful that you’re covering this. I recently read Anne Applebaum’s book Red Famine, which also goes over this in great detail over the course of time. Highly recommend her books to anyone who wants to learn more about Russia’s history of abuse. (Edit because I just saw that you read that book 😂 Perfection, my fault for writing a comment too early)

I'm Danish. So the war has had, and might still have a very real impact on what goes on here.

I just want to say something regarding the news not covering the child abductions, as that seems to be more of an American thing. It has been spoken about a lot on our national news stations.
American news tend to focus more on the particulars of the actual fighting; what areas are occupied by who, who has what kinds of weapons, how many soldiers are where, and in which direction the war seems to be going.
Our news will report on that too, but instead of focusing on specifically that, it becomes the framework to report on what impact the war is having on the civilian population in the particular area.
I remember a story from about a year back, where i noticed the difference between the coverage by msnbc and DRtv. (A somewhat comparable Danish national news organization.)
An American news segment might be:
Russia conscripts so and so many more men to fight as soldiers in Ukraine. They now have so and so many active troops in this and that area, with and expected so and so many new soldiers to be added soon. Here's how (not) well they have been trained and armed, and here's an expert with a guess on how the war will progress in the next two months.

A Danish news report might be more along the lines of:
Russia conscripts so and so many more men to fight as soldiers in these parts of Ukraine. This many men have been forcibly conscribed so far, leading to so and so many desserting/fleeing to avoid fighting with what they see as in adequate training and weapons. This is what the impact on missing this part of the active work force has been on the Russian civilian society, here's an interview with a Russian grandma, who has had three grandsons sent off to war.

I'm not saying that one is better than the other. I think it is probably related in large part to what sources our journalists have available, as well as our proximity to Ukraine.
But i also think it's indicative of a difference in mentality between Europe and America.
Americas viewpoint is often centered on how beating the enemy is going.
We tend to focus more on what happens to the people caught between the two powers fighting.

I love these types of videos on the channel. Oompa seems so much less like he's a character trying to be entertaining, and much more his genuine self. It is kinda weird how the dogs never barking during them. Lol
