What is Meaning?

In Linguistics, ‘meaning’ is the content carried by the words or signs exchanged by people when communicating through language.
In other words, the communication of ‘meaning’ is the purpose and function of language.
‘Meaning’ is what the ‘sender’ of the message expresses or tries to express to the ‘receiver’.
The receiver in its turn infers or derives the ‘meaning’ from the corresponding context.
In language, meaning is expressed in terms of signs. Ferdinand de Saussure, a famous linguist, divides them as ‘signifier’ (word) and ‘signified’ (mental image).
In written language, meaning is expressed through words (signifiers). In oral language, meaning is described through the sound which translates the (signified) image or mental construction uttered for the word.
Meaning is arbitrary. It’s a convention between the sender and the receiver which implies a relation between a signifier and signified.
