Lesson 74: Floating Static Route

Welcome back to yet another video of our free CCNA Video course! In this video we will discuss floating static routes.

Floating static route is used whenever you want to configure backup for static routes. For example, if you have a branch office and headquarter and you have 2 links between them. There is LAN A connected to one end and LAN B connected to the other end. So, whenever you define a static route on R1 for network B, you can either use Link 1 or Link 2.

Let’s say that you want to make Link 1 as primary link and link 2 as secondary link. In such a case, you can use the concept of floating static route. For that, you are required to manipulate the administrative distance of each static route. Now the concept is, by default, the administrative distance of a static route is 1.

So, you can define that whenever R1 wants to reach B network, it must use link 1 and it will use the same by default with AD value 1 as you want this path installed in the routing table. For the other part, the router can be told to use the AD value 10. Once the router compares both of these networks, it will not install the AD value 10 in the routing table but it will keep it in configuration. However, it will use the route with lesser AD and that will be AD value 1. The primary path will be available in the routing table but the secondary path will be available in the configuration.

As soon as the primary link goes down, it will use the secondary path and this is known as creating a backup for a static route. The AD value can range from 1 to 255 and the router with the higher AD value will always remain in the configuration. As the first router has AD value 1, the second router’s AD value has to be greater than 1.

So, in this video, we have discussed the concept of floating static routes.
