'Mud Pie” Sound Design, Are You Doing it Wrong?

To clarify, there’s nothing wrong with this approach to how you make sounds and music. I am hoping to bring a more efficient strategy to apply this method to save you some time and energy though. I didn’t cover every way that you can use these long audio clips, like tossing it into a sampler etc, but rather explain what’s been working for me lately :)

Perhaps a good middle ground would be to consciously curate a clear and cohesive bass into these 'mudpies' and amass a more tonal arsenal. This way the low end isn't as mushy. Basically, just try to keep the low end clear perhaps via some frequency split somewhere along the line such that the mids/highs are heavily effected and the tonal bass is left pretty much alone. Alternatively, have another less crazy effects chain for the bass signal so that there still leaves room for happy accidents in the bass, but it is still easy to go in and address any issues.
