Food should be a tool for helping us feel our best. But, most people don’t realize what kind of impact their favorite foods are having on their blood sugar, and subsequently their entire body. The symptoms of blood sugar imbalances are everyday occurrences for most people. Feeling hungry even when you just ate, craving sweets, and dealing with acne, hormonal imbalances, and signs of aging like wrinkles are just a few of the many symptoms of blood sugar swings. When these continue to go unchecked more severe dysfunctions can occur, like type 2 diabetes, infertility, fatty liver disease, and dementia.

On today’s episode, I’m excited to talk to Jessie Inchauspé, also known as the “Glucose Goddess,” all about her tried-and-true hacks for balancing blood sugar and increasing insulin sensitivity. Jessie Inchauspé is on a mission to translate cutting-edge science into easy tips to help people improve their physical and mental health. She’s the founder of the wildly popular Instagram account GlucoseGoddess, where she teaches life-changing food habits to hundreds of thousands of people.

Jessie holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from King's College London and a master’s degree in biochemistry from Georgetown University. Her work at a genetic analysis start-up in Silicon Valley made her realize that, as the key to good health, food habits beat genetics. In her first book, Glucose Revolution, Jessie shares her startling discovery about the essential role of blood sugar in every aspect of our lives, from cravings to fertility, and the surprising hacks to optimize it while still eating the foods we love.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, BiOptimizers, and Athletic Greens.

Summary (tips)
1. Meal eating order: first non starchy vegetables, then protein and fat, last carbs, starchy vegetables and sugars (desert)
2. One tablespoon of vinager (apple cider, white wine, rice...) diluted in a tall glass of water, up to 30min before a meal
3. Have a savory breakfast (best mix of protein, healthy fat, fibre)
4. Use your muscles for at least 10min after a meal (a walk, cleaning the house, walking up the stairs, dancing, squats...)
5. Never eat a carb or desert on an empty stomach, leave it for the end of a well balanced meal and/or drink 1 tablespoon of diluted vinager in water before eating it and/or use your muscles for at least 10min after you've ate it.
6. No naked carbs/sugars, put some clothes on them - pair it with some protein, healthy fat and/or fibre ( e.g. chocolate cake with some greek yogurt, piece of sourdough with some avocado or butter, rice with some eggs or salmon or greens, cookie with 10 raw almonds...)
7. Eat whole fruits, no juices (even if it's mixeds with some vegetables)
8. Avoid dried fruits, oat milk, coconut water, rice cakes (treat them all as a dessert)
9. Well balanced smoothies (PHFF) with no fruits or very little fruit (best berries)
10. Better choices: Sourdough over white bread, steel cut oats over oatmeal, starchy vegetables over white bread/pasta...
11. Grapes, pinapple, banana - higher fructose levels, always put clothes on them or eat as dessert
12. Eat more healthy fats - avocados, avocado oil, olive oil, fish...
13. Stress and poor/lack of sleep spikes glucose levels and the body's ability to properly function
14. If you wake up tired, eat savory breakfast, 10min high intensity workout shortly after you wake up, then coffee or just skip coffee, to feel better and reset your body

*PHFF - protein, healthy fat, fibre

I’m type2 diabetic. Last night I eat veg+salad first ( dressed the Italian way, olive oil balsamic salt pepper), then small portion of red bean soup with beef ( organic) pieces, 1 small glass of red, to finish home made ball of sweet potato coated in grated coconut.
I mesured my blood sugar level.
Hugely surprised to see no glucose spike. It’s a first.
Haven’t sorted the breakfast yet as it spiked yesterday and this morning.
I will avoid certain foods to see what triggers the spike.

Thanks very much, this is life saving advice

I went to the ER with my first ever panic attack on a sunny, happy morning with my friends. I woke up with panic attacks in the middle of the night for a week, had tachycardia and palpitations. It took two months, 7 doctors, and a last ditch effort to find a source to realize it was related to my blood sugar and cortisol.

I'm disciplined about detoxing, eating "super" foods, and avoiding toxins, so it was a shock to myself and my family that I had blood sugar issues. I've worked with a naturopathic doctor since then and am getting to the root cause, and fixing my gut health, but this video was so insightful beginning to end and encouraging.

I was so nervous I could never even have honey again, and this has helped me feel like it's just a now problem that has a clear route to healing. Thanks for sharing!

I have to say that I am amazed how much better I feel by eating my food in a particular order. I feel more satiated and calm. It is remarkable. Thank you 😊

Fascinating conversation. I would like to get the book “Glucose Revolution” and understand more about the Insulin spikes and how I can prevent this. I am 66 years and doing everyday 16/18 hours intermittent fasting and twice in a month 34-35 hours dry fasting. My HbA1C 5.6 %. I have reversed my diabetics and now no medication at all.

I love these suggestions & was familiar with some of them.
The one thing I always object to is the notion that we can stop aging. We age. We are nature. There’s no way for the leaves to stay on the trees, avoid autumn & not die. Aging & death are part of life.
I am 61. I smoked for a score. I lived in a sunshine climate for 22 years. I take no pharmaceuticals. I have been learning these hacks over my lifetime as a yogi & a wellness coach. I had a relatively easy menopause journey. I’m not overweight. I walk 3-5 km/day, practice yoga every day, have 1 drink almost every night.
Look after yourself & enjoy your life. Learn to pay attention to your practices mindfully so you can stay in charge. You are worth it. 🙏🏻💕💃🥂

This young Dr. Is so realistic for many of us who can’t cut off carbs and sugars, so refreshing to hear these hacks making it easy for us to still enjoy some treats from time to time, Dr Hayman, I appreciate your knowledge but sometimes because of where we live and what we can afford it’s difficult to attain all these organic and grass fed foods, it’s quite expensive on our side of the world so it’s great to hear that someone of us still have some hope in keeping our bodies healthy by doing these inexpensive tricks

I have pcos and suffered for over 20 years. No help from doctors at all. Gaining weight even though i wasnt eating much...I thought i was going mad. Starches and sugar literally have me sedated.
I feel so much more in control now. This is so empowering.
Ive been doing this a while before even hearing about Jesse. Hearing the science behind it from Jesse, i have decided ro continue this forever. Thank you so much Jesse. The way you explain it is so easy to understand. Love you.

Thank you for doing this video. Wish all doctors would know more about how what we eat affects our health. My dr. told me at my last visit to eat oatmeal every day and it will bring down my cholesterol level when it is doing the exact opposite and causing me fatigue on top of it. How wonderful it is that you also explain so those of us without medical degrees can understand it. Keep those videos coming for us.

I went to an avocado and coffee for breakfast, some days an egg too. Has changed my whole day. Sardines for lunch, greens. For a chocolate craving use 85% cacoa pieces.

I have cardiac sarcoidosis, inflammation in my heart. It has improved significantly since I've been on this diet, now for about 2 years. I followed this to the T. Did exactly what she says. I also just about eliminated alcohol. Never eat carbs as a snack, only at the end of a meal. Snacks are mainly nuts, cheese. You have to be very disciplined . Listen to what she says.
