My experience: I received CCNA Cyber Ops in August 2018. I was able to have several job interviews with different companies and 4 month later I received a Information Assurance Security Engineer job offer. So, this certification has really has open doors for me.

My CCNA Security Instructor is a Security Professional with CISSP, CCNA/CCNP Security, CCNA/CCNP R&S and according to him, he best way to become a real security "boss" (as you put it) is to work in various areas to gain exposure and experience with routing, switching, Active Directory, Windows Server and client OS's, firewalls, intrusion detection & prevention devices. His reasoning is, it is very hard to prevent people from exploiting and breaking into systems you know nothing about. Also, it keeps you from being suckered by service providers, vendors, or even internal teams like your network or server team when they request you open up ports, grant access, etc. Because they can pitch things to you in a manner that may sound safe, but if you don't understand the technology, you may be introducing new thread vectors instead of decreasing them. His example was a vendor he was dealing with for VoiP wanted them to use split-tunneling to allow for the best voice quality and the vendor assuring him it was safe, but he knew that split tunneling allows the end user to surf the web via his regular internet connection and that traffic will not be governed by the companies firewalls, proxies, etc., so if you click a malicious link, get malware, it could spread to thru your VPN tunnel and bypass your security defenses. So, while I think CyOps is a great cert, you are probably better off gaining a wide knowledge of technology before going into security so get CCNA R&S, Microsoft MCSA, and learn some cloud and virtualization, and do the LPI Linux Essentials training I believe Cisco NetAcad allows people to take for free. This should give you a good broad range of knowledge to know how various parts of the IT infrastructure connect, interact, etc.

Chuck! You come in clutch again! I recently passed my CCENT exam (some credit goes to you and your motivating videos) and I've been wondering which path to take. This video really helped clear up some questions I've been having about both of these certifications. Thank You!

I have the CCNA Cyber Ops.

Cyber Ops (more like CySA+ than Security+) = Analysis, Reactive, Defense, More log analysis, SOC

Security = Implementation, Proactive, Defense, More configuration, Engineer

I'd recommend the CCNA Security over the CCNA Cyber Ops unless you specifically need the Cyber Ops certification for a job.

Obviously go for CyberOps... cause it has a cooler sounding name. 😉

Skip his initial yapping and go to 6:55 for info.

The CyberOps cert is nothing special. It's just Cisco's version of an intro Analyst cert. The real Analyst cert is E-Council's Security Analyst (ECSA). The cert AFTER CEH! You MUST get the CEH as a prerequisite. Oddly, most Analyst and so-called hackers stop at CEH. And as a result, most recruiters, and even IT people, never heard of the ECSA.

Go CCNA Security over CyberOps. At least you can take it to CCIE, unlike the CyberOps certs.

It’s been a few years since this video released and now we have the CyberOps Professional certificate. Have your thoughts changed on taking the CyberOps route at all?

CCNA Security will prepare you to go out and harden and configure routers with various user accounts either locally, or to authenticate via AAA, it goes more in depth on ACL's, covers some firewall configuration, and covers intrusion detection and prevention devices, VPN's. It's geared towards someone that will work at a smaller company or manage branches that don't have more elaborate security systems.

When you said “let’s talk about that” I immediately heard the GMM theme music in my head lol.

The CCNA Cyber Ops is approved for two DoD 8570 roles in the CSSP category. The CCNA Security has two IAT roles and the the CCNP Security has one one IAT role. The value, overall, for the Cyber Ops is currently in that space but may take off in the future. The CySA+ seems to be similar and drew more attention from a recent interview whereas my Cyber Ops cert wasn’t even mentioned.

CyberOps survived the Certpocalypse. What do you think of it now?
