You can easily do this without using any X or other letter; 30 cm : (4 + 1) = 30 cm : 5 = 6 cm. So the short piece is 6 cm and the long piece 4 x 6 = 24 cm (24 : 6 = 4 : 1 - divide both 24 and 6 by 6 and you get that result).

1/5 of 30= 6 therefore 30-6= 24 so 6 and 24 are lengths. i just did it in my head...

Why can't you just divide 4 by 30?

More like a 5 second answer and that's a bit slow. No matter, being the whole point of the vid is for those who need help, not those who don't. 😉
