China reveals its most lethal Hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile

On 19th April the PLA Navy or PLAN has released a footage of a missile fired from its heavily armed Type-055 cruiser. The missile seems to be YJ-21 anti-ship ballistic missile which makes the Type-055 the most heavily armed warship in the world. The YJ-21 anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) has the resemblance to the CM-401 design with smaller diameter and a larger booster phase.

The Chinese CM-401 is an hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missile with a range of up to 290 km and terminal active radar homing guidance. The missile is very similar to Russian Iskander missile. CM-401 is based on the base variant B-611 which is a Chinese solid-fuelled short-range ballistic missile (SRBM). This is missile has also been sold to Turkey under the Transfer of technology.

China tight lipped about YJ-21

Till now there were no information available regarding the new Chinese YJ-21 missile as China as not announced officially regarding the test of this missile. If we closely observer the footage released by Chinese media, we could see the cold launched of a possible two stage missile which means it could be an anti-ship ballistic missile along with Hypersonic Glide Vehicle. The control surfaces are rather small which means this is likely not an anti-air missile. According to open data, the VLS fitted aboard the Type 055s can accommodate missiles with the following maximum measurements: Length of 9 meters and diameter of 0.85 meters. The missile was fired form a Type 055 Renhai-class cruiser and with 8 warships of this class in services will boost the China’s anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities.

Xian H-6N bomber carrying YJ-21/Eagle Strike 21

Another footage released on social media platforms, we could see a huge missile on the centerline of the Xian H-6N bomber certainly appears to be related to the YJ-21, or Eagle Strike 21 which is based on land-based anti-ship ballistic missile CSS-5 Mod 5 popularly known as the DF-21D. The DF-21D missile, dubbed the “carrier killer,” initially follows a ballistic trajectory similar to that of a strategic nuclear missile, then leaves the atmosphere and re-enters it to release a re-entry vehicle that propels down to hit an aircraft carrier.

The H-6N is based on long range strategic bomber based on Soviet-era Tu-16 Badger which has been tailored for long-range strategic missions, aided by its aerial refueling capability. The aircraft has been modified for the carriage of outsized loads, which can carry not only the ASBM but also high-speed drone aircraft and potentially hypersonic boost-glide vehicles.

Air Surface and Land Based Hypersonic missiles

As per the March 8 Congressional Research Service (CRS) report on China’s naval capabilities, top US commanders think China’s arsenal of anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs) can strike moving targets. The YJ-21 or the DF-21D differs from conventional MRBMs in the way that they can maneuver dynamically during reentry and can target huge vessels during the terminal phase of flight.

The air-launched ASBMs, ship-launched YJ-21s and the ground-based DF-21D missiles are the part of China’s anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) capabilities which will keep the U.S. carrier strike groups at a distance far enough from Chinese shores to make their fighter aircraft and cruise useless.

This is living proof of how far China has come and how rapidly their technology is improving. Being able to launch hypersonic missiles from the type 055 makes the type 055 the deadliest warship on earth. Also Being able to launch YJ-21 from the H6-N means China can attack US carriers from long range and turn and run long before US jets would have a chance to engage. These missiles combined with Type 055 Cruisers and H6-N bombers are a game changer.

The YJ-21 is the ship-based version of the DF-21D, but unlike the DF-21D, the YJ-21 is a hypersonic missile with a range of 1200-1500KM. This missile can be launched from both ship and air.

At present, China has fully equipped different series of hypersonic missiles for land, sea and air. Last year, China successfully carried out a low-orbit hypersonic vehicle in space, which can launch hypersonic nuclear missiles from low-orbit in space to ground targets in all directions. The United States and the West have responded to this Shocked and terrified.

During WW2 the Aircraft Carrier rendered the Battle Ships ineffective and have become sitting ducks to be Sunk.
Similarly the Hypersonic Missiles with Superior Homing Strike Capability will render the Aircraft Carrier a Sitting Duck to be Sunk.

China is bent upon to neutralise the U.S. Navy's superiority of Aircraft carriers strike capability by deploying heavy cruisers/destroyers equipped with LR/MR hypersonic cruise missiles rendering them useless & crippled by attacking with hypersonic missile.
A small example of this newly formed strategy in action has lately been seen by the world when a 12500 ton class Russian heavy cruiser Moskva was sunk by 2-3 Ukrainian missiles. so if heavy bulky ships like Aircraft Carriers, Battleships, Cruisers or Destroyers are going to be the sitting ducks against these cost effective lethal hypersonic missiles in the futuristic naval surface warfare then all the navies world over will be compelled to give a second thought to the acquisitions of heavy ships meant to control the sea.

Desi Jugaad must be implemented to arm our destroyers with at least multiple modified Agni Prime Ship launched anti-ship hypersonic glide missiles with MARV capability. Air launched version from slow-moving transport aircraft is a big no. India does not have access to dedicated bombers. DEWS must be fast-tracked too so that by 2030 we will have access to anti hypersonic missiles.
