Once upon a time lived a man starving continually, he was Starving Matthias. In his great misery he nearly hanged himself when he met the devil. He managed to swindle a quintal of gold out of the devil. Later on the devils wanted to get back the gold but Starving Matthias outwitted them at all times. He starved never again. When he died the devils did not dare to receive him into the hell but St. Peter did not receive him into the heaven even. Since that time Starving Matthias has been sitting at the heaven’s door.

Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
Directed by: Marcell Jankovics, Mária Horváth
Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
Music: Kaláka band

The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

I love how Matthias's wife stuck her head out the door smiling so she could see another of her husband's tricks

I like how the devils thought 200lbs of gold is too much. Like they are just evil not rich.

This story definitely has the most dubious moral code out of all of the other ones I’ve seen so far lol, Matthias was starving and prepared to take his own life when he just happened to outsmart a few remarkably obtuse devils who God probably doesn’t like anyway. I don’t understand why he wasn’t let into Heaven!

If you pause 5:53 just a little before they shut the door you can glimpse the devils looking up in terror before Matthias lands.

i’m confused .. if Matthias was trying to get rid of the devils, why was he not lit into heaven? they weren’t his friends 😂😂

I'm pretty sure another name for the Devil in Hungarian folklore is Ördög, a shapeshifting creature known for judging good and evil, which sounds awesome!

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Devils in this story are really fashionable.

Can't help but notice that a lot of Matthias's success is owed to A: devils not knowing what common animals are, and B: devils buying into his lies without question.

It is a Hungarian version of “The Tale of the Priest and his workman Balda” by Pushkin.

Devils: “We’re strong! We’re fast! We’ll win back the gold and Matthias will lose!”

Matthias: “Hold my bread!”

At first i was sad Mathias stayed out of heaven at the end 😢 but i realized he wasn't going to heaven if he had hung himself.

This remind me of a similar story here in brazil, "O corpo seco" a translation would be the Dry corpse.
Thanks for the video
