What is the Rebel Sentry's Purpose on Yavin 4? #starwars

What is this Rebel sentry doing on Yavin 4? He is manually scanning any ships on approach to the hidden Rebel base. One of the benefits of setting up the secret base near Yavin was the fact that the gas giant created a lot of electromagnetic noise, which was able to hide Base One from any passive Imperial sensor scans. Basically meaning it would be hard for the Empire to just stumble upon the base, they would have to make a purposeful scan of the planet to find it. The down side of that electromagnetic noise was that it meant the Rebellion’s passive scans were also useless, so sentries were required to keep guard to inspect any incoming ships.

Its cool to finally know what this guy actually does with his scanner device, but I did like that Family Guy joke of him doing pew pew sounds with it.

Fun Fact:

"The sentry was played by Industrial Light & Magic's Lorne Peterson, who said that he conducted the dangerous job of standing in the recon-tower because he was the only one in the special effects crew who had no children"

He's clearly checking if they're going over the speed limit. The Millennium Falcon was going 30 over the speed limit with a suspended license.

I like that they canonically set up in a sith temple that was STILL haunted. Like the haunting continued while they were there, they just figured it was less annoying than the empire and ignored him. Which worked.

"Plot armor detected in that ship, it's one of the good guys."

What I've always wondered is how on Earth do they get up and down from there? I don't see a ladder.

Remind me of a traffic cops radar gun to detect speeders.

God I wish the rest of the movie was this well detailed and made as much sense

I always thought he was scanning their speed on radar like cops do on the highway

he was doing what the director told him to do.

Huh...I thought he was just giving out speeding tickets this whole time.

If star destroyers mounted even basic telescopes onboard and went anywhere near Yavin they'd probably notice the conveniently habitable moon orbiting it, EM interference or otherwise.
They'd not immediately be able to tell it has a rebel base obviously but the fact its a habitable jungle moon may be enough for a patrol to be drawn in by it and take a closer look.

But then it became useless because the falcon had a tracker and empire was able to find it!

Better question, how did he get up there?

I prefer to think that he's enforcing the speed limit. They are in a school zone after all.

An even more important question, why is his platform so small?! It's almost as insane as there being no rail barriers on the Death Star
