In actuality, Marine Raiders first began in WWII and Force Recon also did so. In August 1942, the 1st Mar Div landed on Guadalcanal without their heavy equipment such as the White M3 Scout Cars for the division Recon Battalion. So the Recon Marines underwent a crash course in what became Force Recon.
On the other hand the Raiders were formed from the ground up under direct orders from the president. 1st Raider Bn under Meritt Edson were attached to the 1st Mar Div for the landings in the Solomon Islands and were crucial in the defense of Henderson Field. 2nd Raider Bn raided Makin Atol in a distraction for the Guadalcanal operation before also winding up on the island for a Long Patrol.

The Raiders have their roots from the Marine Raiders of World War 2.

Marine Raiders were established in 1942. There were two battalions. They were Dispanet after the war, and then re-occurred in the early 2000s there was a fight for them to be in special operations. The commandant didn’t want it at first and the army never wanted the Marines to be in special operations command. But that change in 2006.

Both Marine Raiders and Force Recons have lineage to ww2, Marine Raiders and Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion respectively. Marine Corps created Marine Raider Regiment and MARSOC after realizing that the GWOT is a little different war.

The USMC are special operations capable. MARSOC was made from Recon Marines and were originally(for about eleven months) the MARSOC troops were Recon Marines under SOCOM.

Though the Marine Raiders were disbanded after WWII they still ran a raider school in Okinawa, which I went through in 1971.

A Raider or a Recon Marine will tell you. There is no such thing as an elite Marine. There are only Marines. Fleet Marines and Marines that grace SOCOM with their presences. Still Just Marines.

Sorry, but I was assigned to 1st SOCOM (Abn), in 1987 when USSOCOM was established. At the time the Marine Chain of Command didn’t want to play in the Special Ops sandbox. They were worried about loss of control of their bodies, funding and the Spec Ops funneling off their best. The USMC said at the time all Marines are Special. The USMC didn’t join USSOCOM until 2006. 🤔🇺🇸
