Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Quick, quick, tell me something awful
Like you are a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy
Tell me all your secrets, all you'll ever be is
My eternal consolation prize
You see, I was a debutante in another life, but
Now I seem to be scared to go outside
If comfort is a construct, I don't believe in good luck
Now that I know what's what

[Chorus]
I hate it here so I will go to secret gardens in my mind
People need a key to get to, the only one is mine
I read about it in a book when I was a precocious child
No mid-sized city hopes and small-town fears
I'm there most of the year 'cause I hate it here
I hate it here

[Verse 2]
My friends used to play a game where
We would pick a decade
We wished we could live in instead of this
I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists
And getting married off for the highest bid
Everyone would look down 'cause it wasn't fun now
Seems like it was never even fun back then
Nostalgia is a mind's trick
If I'd been there, I'd hate it
It was freezing in the palace
[Chorus]
I hate it here so I will go to lunar valleys in my mind
When they found a better planet, only the gentle survived
I dreamed about it in the dark, the night I felt like I might die
No mid-sized city hopes and small-town fears
I'm there most of the year 'cause I hate it here
I hate it here

[Bridge]
I'm lonely, but I'm good
I'm bitter, but I swear I'm fine
I'll save all my romanticism for my inner life and I'll get lost on purpose
This place made me feel worthless
Lucid dreams like electricity, the current flies through me
And in my fantasies, I rise above it
And way up there, I actually love it

[Chorus]
I hate it here so I will go to secret gardens in my mind
People need a key to get to, the only one is mine
I read about it in a book when I was a precocious child
No mid-sized city hopes and small-town fears
I'm there most of the year 'cause I hate it here
I hate it here

[Outro]
Quick, quick, tell me something awful
Like you are a poet trapped inside the body of a finance guy

So Taylor Swift’s parents named her after the great recording artist James Taylor. And wow! She has really owned up to that name. Her music is sublime, as she is already one of the greatest recording artists of all time. Mark 11:24

Funny lyric when taken out of context, but you need to actually look at the next couple lines "Id say the 1830s, but without all the racists and getting married of to the highest bid. Everyone would look down, cause it wasn't fun now. SEEMS LIKE IT WAS NEVER EVEN FUN BACK THEN. NOSTALGIA IS A MINDS TRICK. IF I'D BEEN THERE ID HATE IT

Umm ... Taylor made it clear she would NOT feel any more content in the 1800's than today. The song well expresses the longing for what we can never ever find here ... and the fervent hope in our hearts for ... "a better planet (where) only the gentle survived." There is so much hatred and war and suffering here. The lack of kindness is often beyond what can be endured . It's difficult to find love, much less romance. As a disillusioned and introverted person I also understand perfectly that the sweetest, safest place exists within my mind. Lucid dreaming is a real thing, and you can find yourself in a place so real, so peaceful, talking to the people you know there, but ... not here.

In poetry and therefore, songwriting, there is this thing called metre, and the words within the poem must hold to a certain beat or rhythm, which limits the use of long explanations: the challenge of meaning must be met within the concise use of words that work for the song. "Racism" worked. It was not meant to minimalize the inhumanity of slavery. Rather, the conclusion that she would hate it there as much as here emphasizes her distaste for the era upon reflective thought.

True poetic minds ARE tortured. There is a certain pain that is almost inherent, and collectively experienced among those who see this fallen world for what it is.

I think Taylor is a kindred spirit. To some of us.♡

She’s clearly saying that playing games with friends like “what decade would you live in” she says “1830’s but without all the racist people and women being sold off for money”.After she says all her friends look down at the floor and the game is no fun now because she brought up the negative of the decade that when playing the game you don’t really think about. And it makes her realize the 1830’s wasn’t even fun back then either and for her now isn’t fun too. I’ve played the game before carelessly with my friends before not thinking of the negative and saying I’d wanna live in certain decades because of how they dressed or whatever, but getting older playing the game I’ve made the exact comments Taylor made and have made the exact same realizations as Taylor. Yeah the dresses and clothes were pretty back then but now when playing I’ve had to say “yeah this time period has pretty clothes but I wouldn’t want to live exactly how they did back then.”

The people who think this song is racist must literally be looking for racism within every single thing. Like chill tf out people😂. Not every person is out to make racist comments. She also stated “without the racists”.

Not only does this have one of the stupidest lines in history, it also sounds like a poem written by a middle schooler.

This song is just bad. Literally sounds like a child writing a song trying to sound profound.
