Let me know which of these you have read or any recommendation of a Historical Novel that you personally love.

I read Les Misérables in 2024. I started on January 1st and read a chapter a day, and since it has 365 chapters, I ended on 12/30, due to the leap year 😊. It was a fun project. I will never forget Jean Valjean. He will be with me always.

Les Miserables is the best book I've ever read!

Oh I'm always sad that A Tale of Two Cities never gets any love because I think it's one of the best classics

Les Miserables is life changing. A pure privilege to read. The most heroic character in all of literature is Jean Valjean. I cannot give this book enough accolades.

I read Captain Blood in 2024 because of a recommendation from you. It was one of my favorites for the entire year. I have described it as "The Count of Monte Cristo on the piratical high seas with a romantic subplot reminiscent of that of Pride and Prejudice"

Dear Tristan,
I want to thank you for your work! The way you describe books, motivate us, readers, and share your kind passion is priceless. I wish I could join your reading club but, unfortunately, I can’t. It is alright because the videos you post here are always a pleasure for mind!

I often pride myself in having read “most of” the classics—but Tristan, you keep me HUMBLE, because you always come up with some that I haven’t dipped into yet. You’ve given me three new old books today. THANKS!

The Pillars of the Earth was the first novel I fell in love with--long before I came upon the classics. Thanks for recognizing its brilliance.
No doubt that it will become a classic in the future!

It’s wonderful how you pause and smile after you read certain passages. Your silent enthusiasm speaks volumes.

I read the Scarlet Pimpernel as a teenager, and thought it was sooo romantic! Recently when the San Diego Public Library featured it as one of their choices in the adult story time features I loved it again but kept saying "why don't they just TALK to each other???" This library gift began as a way to continue serving their public during the pandemic, where librarians read books aloud in order to serve their public while libraries were closed (on Facebook but some also posted on YouTube). They also read Three Musketeers and Captain Blood. Loved them all!

I'm really happy that Ben Hur got a mention. For a 19th century novel, it reads surprisingly well. I have a beautiful illustrated edition that I inherited from my late brother.

Update: And The Leopard! One of my all time favourite novels. Lampedusa was a great fan of Shakespeare, whose works he read in English. I'm guessing that was a big influence on how he approached his story. The Prince of Salina does come across as the kind of striking, complex character that one finds in Shakespeare's plays.

Excellent list!!! I am especially excited to see Ben-Hur, one of my favourite books of all time, as well as the Georgette Heyer book on your list. Thank you Tristan. We appreciate all your video's and all the work that goes into each one.

What a great list! ❤ I would add Notre Dame de Paris, Quo Vadis? and the Angélique series as some of my favorites.

I’ve read The Threee Musketeers fairly recently and Silence years ago. You’ve inspired me to reread Silence because I don’t remember much about it, other than that it did make an impression at the time. Thanks for this great video!

A Tale of Two Cities, Ivanhoe, Remains of the Day, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, The King Must Die, The Last of the Mohicans, War and Peace …

I read Les Miserables also for the first time in 2024 and it WAS my favorite of the year. It had a depth of feeling, of injustice, and of inner turmoil which absolutely captivated me. I *love* Monseigneur Bienvenu. I've seen the musical on stage about 10 times and I was amazed at how much of the book and even specific lines that were incorporated into the lyrics and the drama. I appreciate books that inspire an experience of the soul.

Well, I've already got a stack of twelve on deck for the year, but I'll certainly add Ben-Hur, Lorna Doone, and the Three Musketeers. Great content, as always!

I'm going to out myself here as a 'collector' of classic novels. I fell in love with the Penguin clothbound editions and gain one a month which look exceedingly pretty on my shelves. So I own a few of the books you mention. I am not much of a classics reader but I absolutely want to be and I watched your video with your one tip to read more classics. I have started and am now 60 pages into The Brothers Karamazov (I read Crime and Punishment and adored it so wanted to read more Dostoevsky) so wanted to say thank you for planting the seed of the idea that has sprouted. I'm very much enjoying reading bite-sized chunks of an absolute brick of a book which was so intimidating I kept avoiding starting it!
