This video is going to discuss some unusual trends I'm seeing in VHF and UHF mobiles and handhelds. Then we'll take a look in the HF world and ask the questions, “how much power do I really need?” and, “are we abusing the privilege?”

Thanks for watching, and don’t forget to Like, Share, Comment, and subscribe…

Yep... You said it all: "The most important piece of equipment in any ham station is the antenna" A correctly tuned antenna will output more power than a poor antenna and as you know - antennas are the best investment you can make.

Spot on! Great video. Antenna first! I liked and I am already subscribed. I really appreciate your clear delivery. With regard to handheld transceivers, you are right. The rubber duck aerials, even the larger aftermarket ones, are not much better than radiating dummy loads. Whenever possible, I connect my handheld to a home-brew Slim Jim antenna, made from 300 Ohm twin feeder to a design on DK7ZB's web pages. I support it on either a compact telescopic fibreglass fishing pole, or PVC electrical conduit. It is a massive improvement over a rubber duck. Thanks again. 73, Mike. M0MTJ

I agree. I have worked the world on 100 watts and a wire antenna. Exception might be EME, and That's easier now with digital modes. Cheers de N4IQV

Even though rubber duck antennas are "crappy", I'm still able to use my Kenwood 2 meter handheld running 5 watts max to get into a repeater about 50 miles away. The repeater is tied into a trunked system which allows me to work most of Vancouver Island and into the British Columbia lower mainland (Vancouver area). Having said that, I agree with everything in this video regarding lower power and efficient antennas. Ivan...VE7IVN

I run minimal power every time all of the time. From ND to European countries with less than 100 watts and a ground mount vertical. Good QRP results with a wire antenna. de w0vet
