Liquid Nitrogen VS Lava

Opposites attract, but not when frosty liquid nitrogen goes up against fiery lava.

Liquid nitrogen boils at temperatures of -196 °C (-320 °F) and can freeze living tissue, leading to frostbite or even losing a body part.

Depending on its viscosity and slope, lava can ooze along at speeds of up to 30 km/h (19 mph), destroying almost anything it touches. If that wasn’t terrifying, this extreme substance often stays incandescent, holding in its heat for about 50 years if it's thick enough.

Which liquid would come out on top in battle? Would lava scorch the icy nitrogen or would liquid nitrogen freeze out its competitor?

Go Lava! That being said, I know first hand (or should I say “first finger”) why you shouldn’t mess with Liquid Nitrogen. Back at Millersville University in a Physics lab, an old lab partner said I wouldn’t touch a metal ball that had seconds before been taken out of the Liquid Nitrogen. I knew it was a bad idea, but there was no way I was going to be called “chicken” for the rest of the semester. We shook on it and simultaneously lightly touched the metal ball right after the next experiment. Both of the tips of our pointer fingers instantaneously froze and did not get back to normal for 45 minutes. 🤦🏼😳 Both of us lost the first couple layers of skin.

It make’s sense because the lava is 2200 degrees F and the nitrogen is -310 F. The heat is more extreme that the cold.
