It always feels awesome when ThioJoe uploads a video related to windows settings. Would like an another video where you dig deeper in these settings and squeeze more performance.

7:09 I think this setting controls how long it takes for power requests to time out. The default value is the 32-bit integer limit in seconds, which is set that way to effectively disable timeouts

There is a PowerSettingsExplorer utility made by someone on guru3d forums which can view, change, hide and unhide all these power settings for all power plans without ever needing to go to the windows power plan menu. I have used it so many times and it is a huge time saver.

The HDD idle timeouts are actually very useful. If I remember correctly Windows turns off the hard drives after 20 minutes. If you only use them for backup or rarely used stuff, especially in a laptop it would make sense to reduce it

You've come a loooong way since those satirical how to videos. I used to laugh my ass off watching those back in the day. Now I come here to get legit computer help. Thanks ThioJoe!

Max processor speed is useful for laptops to keep them from constantly overheating and throttling.

The advanced CPU power settings that I enable is the "Processor performance boost mode" that regulates the TurboBoost or AMD Boost of the processor. On a laptop I turn it off to save power when on battery and reduce fan usage keeping my CPU at stock speeds instead of boosted speeds. Turning off TurboBoost may help a lot with laptops when cooling is an issue.

The Ultimate Power Settings is mostly reserved for the near-future Implementation of "Microsoft DirectStorage" technology that allows GPU communicate directly with SSD without waiting for request from CPU or RAM.

Imo the cpu performance boost settings shouldnt be hidden, they make a huge temperature difference on laptop processors especially these days

6:42 I am glad to hear someone who is willing to admit that there is something they don't know.

The interrupt on change setting has to do with plugging and unplugging USB devices. The interrupt steering is so that drivers don't redirect requests to specific cores that may be asleep at the time to save power as well as slowing things down due to the wakeup procedures of that core and as data needs to be copied from one core to another. If it lets the system do the steering then its request can be sent to an active core which is likely to be the same core if it had an IRQ previously.

Mr. Thio Joe, you're an absolute king. I was searching for these things for literally one year, until I found your video.
If YouTube allows me, I would give you thousands of likes.
Thank you very much.

I thought the video was going to be a troll. Like years ago. Great to know that you're doing real computer tips and tricks now. 😊

It's worth noting that system oems can tie into these settings as well. For example, my Latitude E6530 from 2012 gives you an extra drop-down in the advanced menu for thermal mode where it gives you the options of Cool, which slows the CPU to 2.3ghz at least for the top tier i7-3720qm model like I have and more aggressively runs the fan to keep surface temps as low as possible. Quiet runs the fan very non-agressively and still limits the CPU to 2.3ghz to allow for quiet operation, standard is the default operations runs at full speed with the normal fan curve. Ultra performance removes the turbo boost time limit and runs the fan extremely aggressively to prevent thermal throttling, even if it results in 90 degree plus temps even after repasting. These settings do not affect GPU performance at least in the NVS5200M which is the top tier for this model, don't know about Intel graphics models.

i used an free app named quickcpu which allowed me to make a custom powerplan and there all of these settings were visible and allowed to change😊hope that helps

Well Nice video, but have you tried to do a performance test to see the difference between High performance and Ultimate performance?
I guess this is the only way we can really distinguish if windows has 'fine-tuned' high performance mode even further.
But I guess it would be a marginal difference of like 5 fps.

Win 10 suspended the USB despite opting the disabled option for both "battery and plugged in" for the "USB Selective suspend setting". But the advanced hidden settings as shown in this video helped to change the "USB 3 Link Power Management" settings which enabled the USB port. Thanks Thio Joe.

It also boosts the kernel and reduces the timers intended for audio video processing and actually unterdict a person, something it will actually trigger that due to the focus of avoiding until you do that 🤔

under processor settings.
its there you can enable or disable turbo or boost mode. of the processor like only going for the advertised base clock speed of your processor.
CPU Throttle States on and off
core parking when to park or not, what cores to park, on them or off.
