Mass has the same units as weight yet they are different? I weigh 90kg so I should be able to divide by gravity and get mass.(9.226) The math doesn't work out. Ok wait. I just had an idea. If I were floating in space were there were no gravity fields except me and 1kg ball (earth weight) and threw the ball the ratio of how much the ball and I separate is and indirect measure of mass. No matter how hard I threw the ball the ratio of divergence would be the same. This number has no units because it is a ratio. The Kg ball was just used to establish a comparison point.
