I did this 20 years ago and haven't had to buy green onions ever since.

You chopped off the best bits. We call them scallions and make champ with them.

I use all of it. And the roots stay in the ground! They keep growing back!

spring of 2022 i bought one of those 99cent bundles of green onion, planted them and not only are they still alive, but they completely ignored all winter weather, survived several freezes and look just as healthy and green as yours in this video, leaves make a great garnish or oniony addition to any meal

Green onions are such a wonderful plant and are so easy to grow. Just plant and forget and you have onions forever

I almost always save the bottom 1-2" of my green onions to plant out in the garden.
I also inherited some kind of multiplier onion, with the house we bought, that develops little top knots of tiny onion bulbs on top of the flower stalks. That stalk eventually falls over and reseeds the onion. The younger tops are good as green onions. The older onions, I dig and use just like, I normally would. They live year round in our zone 6a garden. 😀

As soon as the roots were cut I could indeed smell it through the screen, well at least the memories of it :D

Edit; Also, it's one of those plants that everyone should grow and not pay 5 dollars a bunch at the supermarket for. Stuff grows like delicious weeds, and can be done inside in a large pot near the window.

I bought some tiny scallions from the grocery store. They started to wilt in the fridge, so I decided to “stick them in the earth”. 10 months later, these scallions are massive and thick like yours! They produce a beautiful round flower and they are indestructible in west Texas (drought, winter). Thank you for this video. I wasn’t sure if I was able to cook with them. Now I know I can!

Here is a tip. When they are flowering and seeding, the stalk with the flowers are different, they're firm and tube-like rather flat. Those stalks are delicious with omelette!

Did that decades ago! Had fresh green onions for years, all from grocery store green onions!

The beautiful globes filled with tiny purple flowers were so attractive, I used them to edge my long rectangular herb garden (flower bed) beside my front walk, that a stranger stopped, rang my doorbell and asked what exotic flower it was. I just laughed at the fellow and explained they are onions.
Green Onions don't mind snow at all. They put them on ice in the stores.😘
Greetings from Texas☆♡

Wow those are massive😮. I get both organic and conventional at my supermarket but never seen any that big.

You better have dried the cut tips and re-planted those roots! So much goodness to be had! Especially since you live somewhere that has a constant harvest cycle. Even if you grew/ planted too much, give it away! I give plants to my doctors, restaurants we frequent, etc. Always good to share a plant!

I bought grocery store green onions about 6 years ago, planted half the pack, and have not bought green onions ever since. 😊
I treat them like decorative plants and only cut and eat the big outer leaves. When over-planted, they're very pretty! When they bloom I pretend they're fancy allium flowers. And when they go to seed, I just take the dried flower heads and whack em against the dirt in the pot for more sprouts later!
