Sonic Origins is Still Not Finished

Sonic Origins Plus is here with an assortment of fixes and additions to the game, making it an improvement from before. But does it reach the status of being the definitive collection?
Corrections:
- The other games have bonus options similar to Sonic 1, but they're hidden and have to be revealed by pressing the sound test (equally inconsistent but still needed correcting)
- I said Super forms were activated in Sonic 2 by pressing up on the d-pad with Y/Triangle but this is not true, all games do it with just Y/Triangle
- You can back out of the level select in Sonic 1 and 2, but you have to press start on the sound test (again, equally inconsistent since Sonic 3 lets you press B/Circle)
- The "I'm outta here" animation exists in classic mode, but not the voice line
- The "Surprise" tab gives a cheat code menu once you complete all the missions which is super cool. (Still nothing to spend coins on, though)

"This isn't Sonic Adventure DX, but it is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle" Is such a perfect description of origins, holy shit.

Technically, the Blue Spheres game was called Blue Balls at one point in development, but that was almost 3 decades ago, so it absolutely would've been a modern decision. WTF?

Just want to point out, Sonic 2 DOES have customization options in the level select. You have to click the "00" in the sound test 3 times or so and the menu will pop up with all of the same customization options as Sonic 1. That's how it was in the Taxman ports too. I have no idea why lmao

This seems like such an easy home run for Sega, but they have somehow managed to miss, let go of the bat and watch as it smash a spectator in the face. TWICE.

I’m so happy you made this video cause I was afraid I was the only one thinking that Origins still needs work. Man SEGA really fumbled the bad with this one. Great video though! Amazing and hilarious as always!

9:53 The Japanese Sonic 3 manual actually used that name, so it might be a case of Sega translating the name rather than using the english manuals.

I've been using the TMNT Cowabunga Collection as a gold standard for what modern collections should strive for. LOADS of extra content, customizability out the ass, plenty of ways to interact with the history of both the games and the franchise as a whole, emulation is decent, menus and presentation polished to hell and back, and the game list is stellar. Seeing how well put together TMNT is compared to the sloppy menu organization, inaccurate recreations, frequent glitches, and general rushed feel of Origins is so frustrating as a Sonic fan.

It's extra frustrating when people get mad at the fans for being too "entitled" because of issues like these, as if the variable quality of Sonic's releases is the fans' fault and not the devs. Why should the people who *know* these games can be better stay quiet just because other people aren't quite as bothered? Why are *reasonable* expectations from hardcore fans dismissed purely because other people carry lower standards?

It's 2023, we've seen fans do MUCH better for ZERO profit. I'm by no means saying a modern upgraded port collection is a simple project to tackle, but when the totally-free fan efforts blow the PAID RERELEASE from the games' parent company out of the water, in addition to much else of Sega's interest in cash over quality, I see that as well enough justification to be mad.

They didn't even fix the extra unlock glitch in Sonic CD's menu!!! (in short, even if you have the correct time trial times to unlock all extras, you HAVE to open the time trial screen before opening the extras screen every time you boot CD, because the game fucking FORGETS YOU UNLOCKED THE EXTRAS. EVERY TIME.) I'm certain something similar still happens with Hidden Palace Zone in Sonic 2, as I got to HPZ in a run, but was never able to unlock it to be selected in the level select.

Amy is basically Cream the Rabbit from the advance trilogy in this collection

In regards to 11:41:
"Why don't all the games have the same features?"
Keep in mind that although all the games run on the Retro Engine, they're still separate games under the hood. The ports were made at different times, and in different versions of the Retro Engine. CD's is from 2011 and made in RSDKv3, 1 and 2 are from 2013 and made in RSDKv4, and the Sonic 3 port is new to Origins, made in RSDKv5.
While changes were made to bring the games more in parity with one another, there are bound to be inconsistencies. Even minor QoL updates can't be made to every game at once; they'd need to be programmed into each game separately. Bear in mind also that 3K is the only game to use Stealth's new Path Tracer collision system for greater physics accuracy.

00:02:03 The fact they PUNISH those who already bought the game by making them pay more is where this collection goes from disapointing to borderline immoral.

Ripping costumers off like that should be treated as unnacceptable. Fans should give the company backlash to make DAM sure no one ever pulls another shady move like this.

I just don't see why I should buy this, still. Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic 3 A.I.R. - those are all I ever need, because Origins completely fails to reach the quality of those _fanmade_ (and very much legal) versions of those games. They are substantially, _SUBSTANTIALLY_ better in numerous ways. Why would I buy Origins?

As a major Sonic fan who jumped into Origins for the first time at Plus. I’ve had fun with what they offer, but I feel very disappointed for those who bought in an even worse state and… didn’t get any promises met,

What are the worst things to me is in Sonic 3 when you get an extra life the music starts over

For the bosses being inconsistent, that was actually in the original mobile ports, they let you camp behind Eggman in Sonic CD in the original version, so they just didn't change it.

The cut at 15:28 was both poetic and brutal, well done lol

Cant wait for Sonic Origins Plus Deluxe with Sonic Schoolhouse, Dr Robitnik's Mean Bean Machine and Tail's Sky Patrol with ok emulation!

I’m really disappointed that the physical version doesn’t include the Plus content on the disc like Mania Plus did. It really does ruin a lot of the preservation aspect of this collection.

It’s even worse that it requires a download code of all things.

I ran into that very same glitch with Amy at 12:01 and reported it to SEGA. Was not pleased about it, Found another one with all the characters in Lava Reef where after Knuckles hits you with that boulder down to the boss area, you for some reason lose over half of your rings.
