Dave´s always a great inspiration in my musical life, I could listen to him for hours ...

Never doubt the power of using a softer knee on compression and/or, using soft clipping of the transient peaks to help everything fit into the song better. Many digital mixes suffer from this unlike analog because much analog gear was automatically shaping the sounds to have softer transients and even a less present and less dynamic high end(another audio illusion that makes things sound more in the song).

Of course the opposite of using hard knee compression, digital brick wall limiting, and very digitally present an dynamic high end will make a sound "pop out" of the mix more and seem more forward. These are the tricks of depth apart from volume, panning, and reverb predelay. You can attenuate depth even in a mono mix very well using tricks of choosing which transients to soften or harden and how much. Its that little bit that goes a long way.

That was pretty cool. You could really feel it moving forward and backward in the mix as you tweaked, but you never lost it. I can see this being a really effective tool to keep a dynamic background vocal behind the lead without squashing it a ton and LPF the high end.

What a wonderful coincidence, I happened to be having that precise issue with claves in a mix I'm doing right now. Thanks Dave!

your videos are short you don't explain too much and confuse the shhh out us. you just give us the simple clues which is key is helping one develop their own sound as an engineer.

I like to use compression with a fast to mid attack to push things back in the mix and slow to push bring things fwd. Great trick.

I learn so much valuable shit from watching pensado

So transient shaping is similar to using a compressor or expander that has a preset fast attack? It's possible to actually go deeper with transients by using a multiband compressor and then control each band of the musical piece by using attacks & releases to affect how the transients behave. It works well if the compression can go all the way down to 0. You could create sounds that either stick out or tuck them in perfectly and you could even balance them out with more control through the frequency spectrum.

Thanks for this. My first instinct is to emphasise transients on all percussion but having everything competing is maybe not a good thing. I'll try backing them off instead to leave room for the more important parts. I note that Stillwell do a good transient plug also, and are now AAX.

Sometimes transients help me with Acoustic picked guitars
great stuff!

Oh yeah there's definitely more depth to that Shaker after you lopped the transients. I suppose with exactly the right filtering and Dynamics processing you can place the general Imaging anywhere you want

That last plugin might sound good on guitars.
