a common thread i have noticed with old school mixers is that because they are constrained by the amount of hardware they have, they were forced to make more cohesive / glued mixes than people who mix ITB today. if anything they were fighting to create separation whereas people ITB are struggling to make their stuff gel / glue

CLA, one of my biggest inspiration. This man is a Mixing BOSS! Love the way he approaches mixing.

This is one of the most important concepts in mixing, IMO. Ever notice how it’s much easier to mix live sound than it is to mix a truly *great* sounding record? Of course...that’s because you’re provided with a space. Venues and halls lend automatic “dimension” to music. Recording is the direct opposite. Many times you’re presented with the driest possible sound. If you don’t give the music a nice space in which to exist, it will never sound the way you hear it in your head.

“That’s not really depth, that’s more a mistake”

This is good, because he's speaking conceptually in a way that is brand and platform agnostic

"Mixing with depth, a landscape of effects without being able to pick anyone of them out". Words of a master.

Looks like something you would see at a NASA space station. I can see through mountains watch me disappear. I can even touch the sky. Swallowing colors of the sound I hear. Am I just a crazy guy you bet. That is the sound performance, magic and expertise we get from Chris Lord-Alge and his "touch" with music mixing.

If you run Reaper, it's super easy to send multiple tracks to a single reverb, and out to a delay, without any outboard gear or console. You can create 4 reverb tracks, 4 delay tracks, and send any track in/out, back, forth, whatever... and manipulate them on the fly in the mixer panel.

A few years ago, I've stopped watching CLA's tutorials as they were always full of confused claptrap, indeed using opaque concepts such as "Organic, smooth, natural", so I'm glad he changed his attitude and I salute this one that is clear and informative! :-) Thanks!

Content aside, this is Chris' most engaging focused presentation I've seen him do, and I have seen the lot. Great focus on concepts and content, my opinion about the man has elevated.
G'job Chris 👍 stay safe and well all ✌️

Damn it's crazy looking back and seeing Studio A like this. Can-Am my old stomping ground from 94-05. Memories came flooding back that's wassup! Lil history for y'all. In August 96 this room was candle lit with the lights off and chronic smoke while we played back the mastered version of Hail Mary on the big rig and tripped tf out.
