It’s unfortunate that this promotion went out of business in less than a year. They seemed to be drawing bigger crowds at this point. Paul E just couldn’t handle money and kept paying guys WWE and WCW money, which he had to do to keep them from being raided by the other 2 companies. You know it’s bad when you have a WWF contracted guy and a WCW contracted guy wrestling for the ECW title. That’s some bad booking right there. ECW needed someone who knew how to handle money. And their booking went from outstanding in their early days to absolutely ridiculous towards the end. They finally had a network covering their product and rather than trying to top themselves, they just got worse. They were where struggling wrestlers used to go to get themselves over. The problem is that once that happened, most were gone immediately. Even flagship wrestlers like Shane Douglas and RVD left for more money. That’s the problem when you don’t have Tony Khan or Vince the Pince money. You can’t afford to keep guys you worked so hard to get over without breaking the bank. When you’re starting a wrestling promotion you’re looking at a period of time where you’re building to something. You should expect that during that time, you’re going to lose money. If you can weather that storm and have deep pockets, you can pull through. But if you don’t, you’re in trouble. AEW is a success because Tony Khan has the cash to sign ex WWE guys who are over and they can then help get the new guys over. Heyman didn’t.
