What's Needed To Start Intensive/Mob Grazing Livestock

Today more and more people are changing the way they graze their livestock. With results of Holistic grazing being so dramatic compared to conventional grazing. Intensive grazing is slowly becoming the new normal. In this video I will go over the supplies needed to get started.

Holistic Livestock management is a system designed by Alan Savory. Alan manages thousands of acres in Africa where he studied the wildlife's constant movement to new land. This gave the animals fresh grass to forage and allowed rest to the areas they had been. Alan then mimicked this system and got great result from the land.

This is a well presented and informative video. It's nice to see the videos by the promoters and researchers, but the really valuable videos are like this one. Here we have someone who actually does it on a daily basis, presenting his experience in a well organized way, speaking clearly in complete sentences without humming and hawing or incessantly clearing his throat or being drowned out by wind noise. This is pure gold for someone who it actually about to start intensive grazing.

I am really pleased to see young people getting into this. I really enjoyed your video, you have a pleasant style and relaxed manner, very easy to listen to. I shall be watching more ...great to find another mob grazer.

Hi, What's the mineral feeder with the fly control top on it called, that looks like an excellent idea, I haven't seen those in Australia, would you be able to do a video on it's use and how effective you find it, what the active substance is that is used in it and so on?

Another great video JC. I was cracking up with that cow smelling your camera but then they really pulled one over on you when they came all the way across the pasture to hijack your instructional video and turn it into a bovine porn shoot. Your vids are great and thanks for recommending Greg Judy vids and others, you've kept me busy looking at great stuff.

Love the video's.

If your looking for suggestions, "Winter Grazing". Be nice to see how your system works in the freezing weather and snow (seeing how it's winter right now).

Were up in Canada (-20 temp, 10-14" snow) and just looking at getting Cattle, but winter grazing is one thing that seems a little crazy for us right now (but maybe once we get cows it will just work out).

Thanks.

Good video Jason. Although I dont have cattle, Ive very intrigued by the mob grazing/hollistic grazing methodologies. It just makes sense. I know it doesn't work everywhere, but it certainly is a more healthily approach for the the animals and humans in the long run. I do wonder why you aren't using a solar fence charger for your fencing? I have a small garden next to my apple orchard, and I use a solar charger from Tractor Supply ($170) to keep the deer and rabbits out. It has a 10 mile range and 0.15 joule. Should be plenty enough for your application? Never have to worry about power outages, and they are virtually maintenance free. Im just thinking out loud. Im enjoying everything Im read about this new approach to feeding and livestock health... Keep up the good work sir!

JC, great video and thanks for teaching us new tricks. Can you elaborate a little bit more on the organic fetter and fly control please.. Is it something you came up with or is sold as a unit. Thanks

JC, that you for sharing your practices so well. I suppose I'm a dreamer but would it be economical to use a horse instead of the ATV? Perhaps the advantage of more manure would offset the added labor. Thanks again. Mike

We used the plastic type post 1st time last yr, we had so many break from snow drifts that were 4-5 foot as well as a few jumper yearnings that snapped them in half. So we stick with the fiberglass post.
My question is, when rotational grazing, can I simply use electric fencing wire instead of the poly wire?
I dont have a crank, but Ive always hooked a post thru the wire and used a screw driver to wind up the wire when I move fences.

How would I go about regenerating a pasture that’s been over grazed for so many years that it’s got next to nothing growing on it each summer? Spreading seed on top in spring? Breaking and reseeding? No till re seeding? Or just start a very dense and very short mob graze on it with lot of recovery? I can also spread my manure on this ground is that a good idea?

Good information. I'm just getting started with intense grazing in Kentucky. Are you using freeze hydrants and water hoses and how far apart? Thank you sir

You have nice fluffy, round, deep bodied cows. I mean, they clearly are adapted to grazing and being outside all year long.
