Does the Bible explicitly or expressly prohibit drinking? No it just says not to get drunk, does the bible expressly prohibit polygamy? No, therefore you could argue it’s perfectly fine. After all David and Solomon had multiple wives. But is it honoring God? I would say no, I would argue a man has multiple wives or wants multiple wives because of sin, that it is because of lust and the desires of the flesh and the human desire to always want more, why else would one have multiple wives. Why would God allow Solomon or David have multiple wives or polygamy to exist, we don’t know, God has his own time frame and plans. I would certainly argue that from a perspective of the women, they may convince themselves they are happy in polygamy but that’s surely isn’t the case. Yes plenty of people are miserable in a monogamous marriage, but the same can be said for polygamy too. Well what does that have to do with drinking? Well does it honor God? We know all the historical reasons they drank. It served as a medical remedy, and disinfectant for water. But we don’t live in 200 AD and we have access to modern medicine, so this argument as to why one would permit themselves to drink doesn’t make sense. Steve said that it wasn’t used for only getting drunk, alcohol in those days served a practical purpose. So what is the purpose for drinking today in modern times besides one’s own pleasure or the feeling one gets from it, there is none. But after all that alcohol is a toxin, a poison, the internet will tell you this much. What about smoking then, the Bible does not expressly prohibit that either or even mention it, but as we know nicotine and other substances are toxins that are addictive, on top of that they are bad for your health. I think anyone can make an argument for either case of smoking being a sin or not a sin. But what does God want us to do? Does he want us to consume toxins that have potential health ramifications, and that are addictive? Or potentially addictive in the case of alcohol, I would say no. If the Bible says are bodies are holy temples, and that we shouldn’t defile them. If our bodies are holy temples is not knowingly and willfully consuming toxins defiling it? Besides the fact it’s addictive it is well know alcohol is bad for your health, search it up. The WHO claims that no amount of alcohol consumption is safe, say what you will about the WHO but they aren’t the only one’s saying this. Considering this fact alone, and not getting into whether it is a sin or not, alcohols bad effects on health, ( search them up just to remind yourself ) I think is reason enough why people should abstain from drinking especially Christians. So if drinking alcohol in modern times serves no practical purpose, does God want us to consume a toxin with bad health effects just so we can indulge and pleasure ourselves? I would say no. I will let you know that I have no intention of consuming alcohol, for reasons of health and me having moral qualm about it. I always thought that drinking was a sin and still err on the side of it being one, as someone who is almost 20 years old and actually realizing that the Bible does not explicitly prohibit drinking has shaken me. I wish it did and that it was more specific on other issues, but this isn’t the case. This realization I think satan will use against me to create anxiety and worry about this topic, I already am going through this. It doesn’t help that I have multiple relatives that drink, to their own detriment in my opinion. Nevertheless I can’t tell you how to think or what to pick, one is ultimately responsible for themselves and will answer before God whether they did right or wrong.
