I'm in Mich. also and just bought a nice 04 Suburban Z71 that is rustfree. It came from Kansas to Mich 4 yrs. ago and just has light surface rust. Had it in the air and my mechanic is surprised how clean it is. I plan to drill holes so I can get oil inside doors, rockers with a longer brake line attachment. You can buy plastic plugs to cover holes. Going to have rust holes if not treated anyway. I'm planning to use warm chainsaw bar oil which is made to be tacky and stay on saw parts. Spray in fall, power wash in spring and respray. Hopefully it works.

very nice method! I did the same 1 times/per year on my father's Civic (from 2000) and he sold it in 2010 with no rust! now I bought Yaris and will do the same!

I use lanolin mixed with turpentine or isopropyl alcohol, these are safe and natural spray methods so I'm not worried about the environmental impact or it reaching my eyes or lungs. Turpentine and alcohol evaporate leaving thin layer of lanolin that is great for rust protection. If I couldn't use lanolin, I'd use acid-free petroleum jelly with some solvent to be able to spray it on. Great results no rubber problems, it even makes rubber last longer. Of course before spraying it i cover brakes only. Lanolin is great that is why fluid film is based on it.

Mix in 50 percent diesel will help the oil "creep" into seams and blind cavities. One downside, oil will eventually harden plastic wiring harnesses. Modern rubber bushes are silicon rubber so remain unaffected.

Use ATF instead of oil. It's made to not harm rubber seals and penetrates better.

Fluid Film or PB Surface Shield are much better than motor oil. they are made specifically for this purpose - they stick better, dont drip much at all, last longer and protect better than just oil.

Seems a bit silly. Lanolin based undercoating is designed for this specific purpose, and will not break the bank. I can’t imagine the dripping mess this will make on your driveway not to mention the fact that it will wash off fairly quickly. NHOU (New Hampshire Oil), Blaster Surface Shield or Fluid Film will do a much better job, sealing out O2 from existing rust and creeping into all the nooks and crannies. Spraying motor oil or even ATF was done years ago when there weren’t many other options.

I wonder if you could blend into the oil some fluid film grease. Perhaps that would give a cheap longer lasting solution.

Then the cost should look good and clean, but I want to save it for the winter

I wouldn't use used motor oil, it is acidic. Other used oils like hydraulic or transmission fluid are fine.

how did you clean your car underneath so well, in the first place? I don't see a grain of rust on it...! Also, do dealerships in USA help with such treatments?

I dont have a lift so im going with a garden sprayer and old oil or mineral oil which is 5.00 a quart and has no color or smell. The wand gives an extra 20 inches of reach.

Is the key thing here a product that is oil based. I hear the rubber ones are worse than just not undercoating at all?

Wont that oil degrade the rubber bushings etc?
