Nuclear Fallout From Google IO 2019?

Oh boy, things took a bit of a different turn when we got off the keynote address at Google I/O 2019. Suddenly, there were emails and notices, and developers were getting hit with some information that they weren't going to like. All this, while I/O is still going on!

#Google has told us a few things now about Nest, Google Nest, and the overall path they're taking. Lots of this makes sense from a Google perspective, but there will be impact in the market and for the average consumer who owns Nest products.

The Works With Nest program is gone, as of August 31, 2019. That means integration with Alexa and the Amazon Echo series of products is gone. IFTTT is also going to feel some pain, with the loss of not only the Google Assistant (a previous announcement), but also the loss of Nest. Android Auto's application is also going away, but not the full Android Auto infotainment center system.

All in all, these will have impacts on your, me, and every one of us automaters. It could be ugly for you, and I'd like to know if it is going to be and what the situation is that you'll have to deal with. It's not all doom and gloom though, as I do think Google has to open up a little bit to the rest of the world. The reason for that is simple, they won't have the same capabilities as Amazon does in their Echo Show and Echo Plus devices that can be triggered by ZigBee devices.

If you need any recommendations for home automation products, here's my Amazon Influencer Shop. It's a curated list of high-quality smart home products (and it's an affiliate link)

Thanks for watching, and please subscribe below!

Thanks for the shout out handsome! Enjoyed the vid as usual. Your camera fills me with jealousy by the way. I have a new one coming tomorrow, hoping it makes my cut aways look as polished as yours.

So glad i didn't invest in the Google ecosystem. They are constantly pulling the plug on products, services, api's etc

I found out today that if your on a call originated from your google home or mini you can say “hey google, press 1” and it pushes 1 on the phone keypad (as if there was one!)

Super handy to know, never knew it did that!

I think the android auto situation is much more dire than you think.

Remember GoogleTV? When android TV was released google discontinued updates and support of all google TVs rendering them completely useless. I won't surprised in the slightest if they just stop updates and never look back.

Great video as always, Brian. I am not sure if this is the best move for Google and the smart-home world, but I am waiting to see what happens further down the line before I would totally abandon any platform. I love Paul and I am glad you did a complimentary piece to this. I felt his topic was very important and needed to be discussed further. Plus, he just so damn fun to watch.

This is strongly related to your topic.
Words like immoral, dishonest, and criminal are the only ways to describe the draconian actions of companies like Wyze and Samsung. The reasons for these strong words are as follows:
1- You buy their products; specifically home automation stuff. They take your money and then, after you install the products, they change their use / privacy policies.
2- You are now REQUIRED to agree to all of the changes that they have made or you will no longer be able to access the software that allows use of the product for which you paid.
3- You have NO choice; if you do not agree with the changes that they make AFTER you bought the products, you are deprived of your property, use of the home automations stuff. Unless you agree to their changes, your investment essentially becomes a useless waste because the software needed to access it becomes non-working. They have taken your money but you no longer can use what you bought. This is OUTRAGEOUS!!
Why no one is screaming about this THEFT is a wonder!! We need class action law suits now.

Hey Brian, will I still be able to control/command my Philips Hue bulbs and Logitech harmony activities?

Thanks for the update. I really wish companies would escrow their services so the wind down to company direction changes or going out of business would have a softer blow (1-3 years) rather than abrupt (3 or less months). Running the works with nest servers can’t cost Google much. Even if they crippled the server environment to have longer response times over time, or something. But that’s just my opinion on software and cheap cloud servers...

Great video as always!!👍 Thanks for a keeping us all informed. I wanted to touch on the the Android driving assistance piece. From what I understand Android Driving assistance isn't replacing Android Auto. This is just a new on your phone dashboard that works while you're driving if you don't have Android Auto in your vehicle. A completely new and LONG overdue Android Auto update is coming later this summer.

This is making my brain hurt! How can I control my lights now? It’s a huge part of my home security.

My neighbor just purchased SIX GOOGLE HOME MINIs from Costco on a "closeout" for $22 each.

He WAS switching from Echo Dots to Home Mini because Google's voice recognition is more accurate than Alexa's.

His entire home is filled with 60+ IoT devices — mostly TP-LINK, followed by SmartThings, Zigby and ZWave.

After showing him your video and Paul's video, tomorrow morning, he is RETURNING ALL six Home Minis to Costco.

In fact, last month he purchased four Google WiFi mesh units from Costco, and he is returning those as well.

He says he is DONE with Google's hardware because it is becoming PROPRIETARY. Google is becoming a remote island, and it's mindless to make a financial commitment to a company that is as greedy and powerful as Google.

So I got a Nest thermostat last Christmas and have been waiting to install it, will it work going forward?

If this is a one-off adjustment, it's one thing, if this happens on a regular basis, it will not be good for Google.

It might have been asked before but I can't see it; since Google are saying their products will still be able to control others, will the Google Assistant triggers be going from IFTTT or is it only actions that are going?

I don't know why people think the amazon exception is weird ... Personally I'll get rid of Nest if it doesn't work with Alexa anymore ... I'm probably not the only one, and Google knows that ..

From the IO we learned that google will focus more on user data security and my feeling is thats the bigger point behind these changes. They want to be future ready. Offering more data security / less data kraken brand image.

So if I have been trying to decide between Alexa and Google for my home automation initial setup, it seems Alexa will have more to offer now and in the future? Or should I hold off?

We use IFTTT with Google Home to add items to several Todoist shopping lists. Will this ability be going away too?
