The simplified version of the reversing valve for heat pumps.

the pipe by itself is always high pressure high temperature superheated vapor form the compressor dischargejne aka hot gas line.

The pipe in the middle of the 3 is always suction, low temperature, low pressure superheated vapor to the compressor.

the reversing valve directs hot gas outside in the summer, and hot gas inside in the winter.
