Do you do these three bad sewing habits?

Because I SURE DO! In case you were ever afraid that the chaos you see in front of you was made up, here are three reasons why I am truly a Sewing chaos gremlin. These are things that I do not support anyone else to do, but I cannot be bothered to correct my own bad sewing habits. So learn from my mistakes, and don’t do these three things when sewing, especially with vintage sewing patterns.

I draft my own patterns then forget to label them or put them away in some kind of order.

I got a bunch of those document envelopes and thats been sort of a game changer. I can just fold things back up and put them in the larger envelope without having to iron and I cant keep them together while I am working on it because its easier to take them in and out without damage

The one gallon ziploc storage bags are great for keeping patterns in. I am lucky enough to have that magical origami like ability to be able to refold patterns and paper maps. I still but them in store brand Ziploc bags. Then store the bags in a tote. It helps keep them from getting wet, they don't have to be refolded perfectly, and you dont ruin the envelope trying to take everything in and out of it. Oh, if you do this, face the picture side of the envelope outward facing the clear side of the bag. That way you can see instantly what pattern is in that bag. Oh, you can also store extra peices you may have copied or are the fitted muslin patrern if you make one with the original pattern. Hope this helps someone.💖

Right after I watched this I watched the latest Rachel Maksy video. She pulled a frequently used pattern out of the envelope and the pieces were crumpled into balls.

I put my patterns, instructions and bags in bigger, A4-sized zip loc bags so I don't have to work out how to fold the pieces 'properly' 😂

Yes putting away all the pieces. I recently found my favourite shorts pattern from the early 90s... missing one piece. Now trawling ebay to see if I can find a replacement.

I love your videos. There's one about not being intimidated about vintage patterns.

But this video here... is why I'm intimidated. Saving a multi size pattern incase I change sizes or make one for my friends.... it's too responsible and i don't WANNA.
thx

As a sewing pattern seller on eBay, I would love it if all of the seamstresses followed your suggestions. 😮

I am really good at doing all of those things except for the first one. I don’t even understand why people do that, but I am not very precious or sentimental about patterns. In my view, I am learning more and more about pattern drafting all the time so eventually, if something is too big or too small, I can adjust it. Or remake it. Or improve it. I definitely like keeping it neat and all together though.

I have never once moved several pattern pieces in my wife’s sewing space, only to forget where I put them, probably on top of some other pieces that they most definitely did not belong with… Never happened… 😂
