Repair to trumpet #2 valve slide and casing after horn has fallen

Disclaimer- it's ALWAYS best to take your instrument to a qualified professional band instrument repair tech than attempting any repairs yourself. This is more a demonstration of how this particular repair is made. I wouldn't recommend anyone doing this until you've practiced on a few 'junker' horns first.

Just happened upon your video yesterday Dave.   Wasn't LOOKING for this fix, but I found it to be a great gift.  I knew I had one horn at home displaying this exact issue... middle valve sicking when pressed down.  I did exactly as you described in the video and it now works perfectly.

THANX!

for what it is worth, I had a similar problem with a Yamaha 6310 Flugelhorn that was almost new. Solved it by cleaning the valves and switching to a synthetic valve oil. Like Hettman's. Yamaha's valve tolerance is pretty tight. I'm not a professional trumpet repair person. I just tinker with them for a hobby.

Hi. Unscrew the cap and lift the piston a little and then rotate the piston until you hear a CLICK. There is a guide that will allow the piston to align correctly into the casing. After the CLICK, blow air through to make sure it's ok. If not, then reposition the piston 180 degrees until it clicks again. Screw the cap back on. That should get it. Good luck!

My trumpet's third valve is sticking, Not too sure if its bent on the inside or if its what you are demonstrating in this video, i'm going to take another look at it too see if that may be the case,
If not how can i repair it from the inside out?

I have a Bach Strad. that has a dent in the the #2 valve casing where the lead pipe is connected. What kind of service is performed to remedy this, and how much might it cost to have done?

@thelonecheeto Hey Don. Interesting you mentioned Dickens, because that's who I'm into right now. Been seriously thinking about buying a 'complete works' collection of Dickens. Reading 'Oliver Twist' in the first editions on Archive was fun. Take care.

Hi Joseph,

Honestly, without really having the horn in hand and checking it out, I just can't tell you. It could be anything from a small nick on the outside of the casing (often caused by a loose mouthpiece in the case), to a mis-aligned slide, to something inside the bore that is keeping the pistons from moving freely. And sometimes when a horn has been cleaned it loosens other things up. Really, the best thing to do is take it in and have it looked at. Wish I could be of more help.

Without actually seeing the horn and inspecting it in person, it's hard to tell you exactly what might be wrong with it. Since the #3 valve is the first place the air goes into from the leadpipe, it often gets the most 'gunk'. So first, make sure your horn is clean and inspect the piston and casing. Also visually inspect the outside of the #3 casing. Any tiny little ding to the casing can cause the valve to stick. Lastly, it's always best to take your horn to a repair tech to be on the safe side

@ramononthetuber Really???? Hey, that's GREAT! Just be careful doing this sort of thing because it's so easy to go too far. Glad it worked out for you!

Thanks Dave !!! This video was very helpful on my sons Bach Stradivarius. He quit band after 2 yrs for sports. He didn't tell me about his horn not playing which ( I suspect ) is another reason he quit. Couldn't sell it if we wanted to, if it won't play. The #2 valve slide is slightly dented and the grab button broke off. Will that effect the tuning? Thanks again  BTW, I have a 1972/73 Stradivarius near mint, that I played in the 70s. Glad I didn't let him use it!!! lol
