When I worked as a Wilderness Patrol Ranger in Alaska, I encountered and saw many Black Bears, which were commonplace.

I remember seeing one who got spooked, literally galloping on a parallel trail, and when I got down to the end of the trail, the bear was there waiting for me.

I greeted him by saying " Hey Bear" and he bolted away into the forest.

Many times I saw bears grazing on grass like cows, and I would just walk by them at a safe distance, and they would just keep on grazing, and ignore me.

Sometimes I saw Grizzlies, sometimes a Sow with cubs, but never had a problem.

I would travel quite often via a large 18' Kayak, and would see Bears along shorelines as I paddled by.

All Rangers in Alaska must undergo Bear Safety Training, and we always carried large canisters of Bear Spray at the ready. Rangers practice spraying inert pepper spray just in case.

Bear Spray is much more concentrated than normal Pepper Spray. Just a little whiff will choke you up. Bear Spray is always recommended as a first line of defense over firearms.

I would keep two canisters with me at all times, especially when sleeping in a tent in the wilderness.

Bears would come around at night, but we never stored food in our camp, and we cooked in a separate area from where we slept.

I once saw a " Glacier Bear"...go look that one up, and "Kodiak Bears" are found on Kodiak Island.

They supposedly reach 1, 500 pounds, only outweighed by the Polar Bears, which will be happy to eat you! They are usually always hungry.

Bear Spray, Karelian Bear Dogs, and something akin to a 44 Magnum, or a shotgun with slugs is recommended around areas frequented by Polar Bears.

When you are on a wilderness foot patrol, you must be able to remain calm and keep your wits about you.

You want to avoid surprising bears, especially if they are feeding on a carcass from a whale, sea lion, moose, deer, mountain goat, or whatever.

I think more people had sketchy encounters with Moose than bear, which wasn't many..

Wolves were shy, and never caused any problems.

Falling into cold water, getting lost, or some type of tripping hazard probably the most dangerous things to avoid.

My aunt and her dog were walking alone and she came across the mama bear and cubs and her dog dragged my aunt knocking her to the ground and out and she woke up with a broken nose and an injury to her ribs and wrist. Glad it didn't turn out worse for her and her dog.

I’m from a Caribbean island we get chase by cows and that’s dangerous too for no apparent reason they’ll chase you maul into the ground.

In NJ, bear no longer have any fear of people. I'm terrified of them as I had a bad encounter years ago.

I have only seen two bears while deer hunting. One was close, and one was like 200 yards. Bears and gorillas scare me...

You should do a tough mudder. There's a good Spartan beast in eastern Ohio that is a lot of fun too

Just give him the picnic basket and don't fight about it.

Good information. Now on a normal, Kevin, smart ass remark, if a bear poops in the woods and no one’s around to smell it, does it truly stink?

But sometimes in the woods you find bear scat that smells like pepper spray and has bells in it.
What doesn't hurt you makes you stronger. Except bears, they will eat you.
Bears think humans are juicy, crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

JJ - swat the bear on the nose with a switch, grab him by one of his cute little ears, and yell "No! Naughty bear! Naughty!"

That way he can help you work on your cardio and survival skills at the same time.

I recommend you run downhill so he ends up tripping and doing uncontrolled forward rolls right past you.

You can trust me, it works great. I've done it several times. (Would I lie to you?)

Edited to add - oh, yeah, and show him your badge. Just to set the pecking order from the outset.

My survive a bear attack plan is to hunt/hike with a buddy...🤣

I believe bears have bad eye sight generally speaking so most of the time when they stand on hind legs it's too get a better idea of what exactly you are cause they can't see you. That and they want to see if they are enough bigger than you to see what kind challenge you might present. So them standing up is your most important time to look big.

Well Leonardo Dicaprio killed one with his bare hands.

What kind of bear are we talking about? Regular black bear, Grizzly Bear, Polar Bear, Panda Bear, Yogi Bear, boo-boo bear, cocaine bear, great white shark dressed as a bear? This is going to really matter on how you should handle the situation.

A bear attack to me would not be my choice of being immortalized.
Reading the stories described by survivors in Field and Stream etc. while growing up blew away my imagination. Watching Leo DiCaprio get mauled in The Revenant was cringe.
The best way to not is exactly what you said JJ. Do your best to not see one by being a loud hiker.
Their nose is their most sensitive organ. I never want to learn how hard or easy it is to punch a bear in the nose.

JJ, is there any truth that a black bear can't run downhill as fast as
uphill or on level ground?
I heard it from someone, and I've been trying to get ahold of him for several weeks. He's a camper, and probably out of cell phone range

I Always have my bear gun with me, .22lr pocket pistol. Shoot my buddy in the knee, I can then easily get away.
