Cheap Corsets CAN be Comfy! FREE Pattern + Quilting Cotton = Historically Inspired Corset

Let's make a decent fitting corset that looks great, gives a historical silhouette, but DOESN'T break the bank... because let's be honest, I don't need to drop a fortune on a corset I'm gonna wear a couple times a year!

I go through the whole process, first turning an underbust corset into a midbust, tweaking the pattern to fit, then making a few mock-ups, and finally making the real deal! In this video, I will be turning Aranea Black's IRIS corset (originally an underbust pattern) into a midbust corset for a delicious Edwardian silhouette! Rounding out the look will be several pairs of socks, because I still haven't had time to fully flesh out my historical padding (pun fully intended).

MY FAVORITE SEWING SUPPLIES:

🧵 The Pattern: Aranea Black's IRIS corset pattern, which can still be found floating around on Reddit and other dark corners of the internet if you dig enough. I'm not going to link it, because I feel there was a reason Aranea took everything down, so it's up to you if you'd like to go hunt for it!

It's still sad to see that Aranea's patterns have been so useful for so many costumers but now she's removed all of her information and patterns and disappeared from the Internet completely. I hope things are going well for her, I've seen from her patreon supporters that she left rather suddenly with a goodbye statement. The corset turned out lovely btw!

I appreciate that you took us through the many months and iterations this took to get a final product. So often we see a short video and then get disappointed when it doesn't come together as quickly when we try at home.

Ahhhh welcome to Iris corset club! You did basically the same thing I did when I turned the pattern into a mid-bust. You and Ora and I will all have to do a photoshoot together someday!

this is all the more beautiful and heartbreaking knowing that aranea black worked so hard but got so overwhelmed and stressed, and i think partly because she lived close to the ukraine war, that she took down everything, I pray she finds peace somewhere and doesnt feel pressured to come back, looking back on it, she did constantly seem on edge in her videos which at the time I just interpreted as chaotic good raven law type energy.

actually i remember she did in fact have a post on her website about converting underbust to a midbust/overbust, and you accomplished it very well!

Great result, as always! Love the colour, subtle yet pretty trim, criss-cross flossing & tip for marking straight grain on wide fabrics. Lovely start to my weekend, thanks! Good luck procuring a zipper foot for your machine. I managed for decades without one on my 1931 hand-cranked Singer, but now I use one very frequently on my recently upgraded(!) 1970s Bernina & it makes life so much easier. Well, sewing at least. Shouldn't overclaim the benefits of a zipper foot for other purposes, I suppose 😂

The colour choices are so lovely! The sort of dusky purple + gold goes really well with the metal hardware. Thanks for sharing!

I remember in the early 70s with knits being new, i was doing a designer pattern and hand sewed the zipper in. Never went back to machine. Hand sewed collars, and sleeves and never had the frustration i did with the machine.

I ❤ you took extra steps which could help future you! 🎉🎉🎉

When we’re excited about a project, our first inclination is to zoom to the finish line and behold our growing skills. This approach frequently sends us into a sea of missed opportunities and major obstacles nearer the end of the project. The place I frequently abandon projects is in the space between initial impulse and the 3rd self imposed obstacle.

Taking earlier and more frequent steps to help our future selves is really the gift of magic!

Great work! I've been loving dusty pinks and purples lately. Every time I watch a corset making video I'm tempted to try and make one too, but I don't dress historically or really do intricate projects.

I'm in shock that Aranea Black' stuff is gone 😢

I love all your corsets but the athletic one is my absolute favorite. ☺️

For anyone buying Shannon's ham kit, as a personal suggestion, and if you can, try to use wool as a stuffing for the pin cushion. It is far easier to use when it's wool instead of poly fill which I found seems to have an odd bounce factor making it harder to pin your pins, and it has been said that the lanolin in the wool fiber will prevent your needles from rusting. It's a fantastic kit and 10/10 highly recommend!

The trick with the second busk or anything the same height is SO SMART, why did it never occur to me 😅

Looks lovely. The colors of the purple and that bronzy lace work well.

Maybe we could have a community zipper foot search! I'd love to see you get one and make more corsets (hint, hint). The lace on this one was the perfect touch!

That's a really clever solution to not having a zipper foot! Definitely going to go check out your Edwardian Miss Frizzle.
