Professor Joel Cohen: Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of Populations, Rockefeller University, Mathematical Biologist, Columbia University

In the next fifty years the world will face population problems that it has never faced before. Billions will live in mega slums without access to clean water or medical care. In his lecture, Professor Joel Cohen teaches you how demography can provide answers to the life or death questions caused by the world's swelling population and dwindling resources. Can we prevent an outcome where wealthy western countries are in permanent population decline, while third world cities into swell into massively overcrowded slums with no access to education, healthcare, or hope?

Dear professor Joel Cohen thank you for the ray of hope for brighter future of humanity. I hope graduates from your program are in every government cabinet. They should have real power to implement the strategies they were taught; otherwise all is lost.

Absolutely wonderful lecture. Cohen is logical, factual, good-natured, and optimistic. Facts and reason beat ideological preconceptions .The critics from left and right who are rejecting him should pay close attention.

Professor Cohen, I notice you focus only on "poor" and "rich" countries. What about emerging economies and the economic differences inside those countries? Hong Kong has today PPP USD$46, 299 GDP per capita, Shangai $20, 313, Guizhou USD PPP $ 4, 674. Also, there are countries that overcame poverty and achieved development like South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan. I admire your insight, but I would appreciate a more detailed analysis on middle income countries, which make up for 5 billion of humanity

He's also not taking into account the peak oil/gas, and peak coal is going to make us have to become more rural (closer to the food sources), not less rural. So he's right in the short run view that he contemplates (through 2050), but you go to 2150, and it's the polar opposite - we're going to have to become much more agrarian in the developed countries than we are now, just to survive. There simply won't be enough gas to transport the food everywhere.

We should all become vegans,  the animals would certainly appreciate it and its not just the huge amounts of grain that are used to feed these poor brutalised creatures but it also takes up huge amount of fresh water we also need to recognise that other species have just as much a right to life on this planet as we have
