The secret is to get someone else to do it.

Two best ways was either rent a ditch witch or tell customer that I'm a slow digger and would save a lot of money if they did the digging.

“Hardest part of a project is getting started” sounds stupid but my neighbor told me this.Should be carved in stone somewhere

Especially in the summer dig very early in the day - try to be done by 10 am to lower your risk of becoming one with the dirt before your time.

The best tip to digging is to have an apprentice. I joke but seriously they are a lot of help when they arnt messing things up that is.

Digging bar and a trenching shovel.

120 volt rotary hammers can make relatively quick work in difficult to dig soils.

Pressure washer. That’s the real secret. Turn that dirt to mud and suck it all out. No harm to pipes or conduit. Can’t chop a mismatched cable. No stress on back.

Honestly, here’s a tip: keep the blade sharp with a grinder or file. Makes a BIG difference.

The right shovel for the job wouldn't be a bad start. Some technique would be a good follow up.

Here in New England no amount of enthusiastic manual digging will overpower our rocky soil. Trench diggers all the way 😊

I can tell it's amateur hour.
1 a smart electrical contractor has in every bid. All ditches and trenches are supplied by other.
2 I you have to dig. That what apprentices are for. It's a cost issue. Do you pay your JW $35/hr when you have an apprentice at $24 doing other things? No. Cheapest labor does the grunt work.

Don’t know if any one that sees this runs a shovel EVERY SINGLE DAY but I do. And he’s kinda right. It’s all technique really. But yes it’s a mental thing too. I’ve seen so many hires cant- dig it-

sblem.

Jokes aside, he's absolutely right. Just turn your brain half off and keep the shovel moving until it's done. If you stop, you wont start again.

I just dug 17 holes, 42 inches deep and 14 inches around with manual post hole diggers. I tried hiring three different contractors and not one of them showed up. Fun times 😑
