it must be very satisfying to work in a job where it's ok to release so much tension.

A single inhale of that dust is enough to cure you of iron deficiency for life

That's the new guy's job. Torching the straps and "opening up" the incoming steel coils.. Exciting!!

This is why I’ll leave garage door repair to the professionals.

Did they draw straws to see who was going to cut the banding? I pick holding the camera or nothing at all.

I have difficulty understanding people's comments mostly about the safety issues, saying there are safer ways to open a coil, or even say the procedure is stupid! Obviously nobody reads the heading saying "demonstration of springback effect in a coil", or the numerous responses I have given to several people. So once again I have to point out that this was an EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE PERFORMED TO DEMONSTRATE THE SPRINGBACK FORCE IN A COIL WHICH WAS NOT ACCCEPTABLE BY THE SPECIFICATION. Thus the demonstrated procedure is not a regular method to open a coil, which is regularly done on a spiral pipe machine's coil opener section and of course under a controlled environment with top security precautions. IN SHORT, DO NOT TRY TO TEACH US HOW TO DO IT PROPERLY, BUT JUST ENJOY TO WATCH HOW GREAT FORCES THESE COILS CAN POSSESS!...

I once saw a workmate open a coil of spring steel. It was laying on its side and when he cut the strap it began spinning on the floor. I didn’t have time telling him that opening it was a bad idea but I had time to tell him to run. The coils rotational speed incrreased until ig looked like the spring in Mickey Mouse Clock Cleaners. Absolutely lethal.

Yes! You can clearly see this is a demonstration. Please note the yellow painted line on the coil. Scary amount of force isn’t it?

I worked as an ironworker for many years, occasionally I would have to split an I-beam and that is also dangerous. When you make the Final Cut and it separates, the two pieces flip wildly and you need to move quickly.

Worked on a rollmill for 17 years. Used hydraulic hold down roller, cut the bands, with band cutters
