ICMP protocol is used to report error messages to the source if there is some problem in sending the data from source to destination. ICMP protocol is also used as diagnostic tool in the network, like we have ping and traceroot.
In this video, we discuss various ICMP messages which are used to report error and during diagnosis or troubleshooting of the network.
Some of the ICMP messages are as follows:
Time Exceeded Message: When TTL field decrements to 0, router sends time exceeded message to the source after discarding that packet.
Source Quench: When the destination can not process large amount of data, it sends a source quench message to the source to reduce the rate.
Echo request: message sent by the sending node to the node being checked for the connectivity that if the IP in the packet is your IP then please reply back.
Echo Reply: If the receiving node verifies the IP address, it sends back a echo reply message.
