I am a sufferer of cluster headache for over 20 years. Taking reactive drugs such as zolmitriptans at the very first sign of symptom onset gives me the only glimmer of hope of mitigating an agonising wave of hell that is crashing upon me. I've tried various triptans and topiramates but zolmitriptans seems to work best for me thus far. I've also tried taking capsaicins, magnesiums, chlorophyll, oxygen, and other natural herbs but none has any substantial effect. The cluster always comes back to haunt.
I've always thought that the root cause was the dilation of the blood vessels so I found this video quite interesting. I've even done a detailed MRI on my brain recently and found no issues with any of the blood vessels around the brain.
You mentioned that the treatment for sensitised brainstem does not require medication and is non-invasive so I'm quite keen to understand what the treatment entails?

I don't suffer from cluster headaches, thank you God, but I have had headaches due to an imbalance of cerebral-spinal fluid due to a spinal tap. I've heard many times that cluster headaches are the worst pain to experience. Where do the headaches caused by the fluid imbalance previously mentioned fall? I have never in my life suffered any pain even remotely close to those headaches. I do consider myself blessed that my body reproduces the fluids necessary over time to end the headaches indefinitely. I'm just curious how the two headaches compare.

Yeah does sound like mine. Causes suicidal ideation alot too. You wanna crush your skull when they repeat. Often creates anger episodes. I am afraid to be in public. I was thinking that the trigeminal nerve or brainstem were inflamed as a cause. (Inflammation)

I suffer from really bad cluster headaches with tension headaches on waking up the morning as I liftmy heard from my pillow. Or during the day. Then I end up having a seizure as I have epilepsy.

I've had chronic clusters for about 10 years. Occasional quiet spell, then back to several attacks a day with the worst coming on during sleep. Tried lots of different meds and "alternative" treatments. I'm lucky that I get sumatriptan injection pens which stop them but they still wipe you out!

I only ever had 2 CH attacks, roughly 6 months apart, before going chronic almost 4 years ago. In that time I once went 4 overnights, and a few times 3 nights without 3 to 5 CH attacks. Otherwise I get them 5 to 7 nights a week, without respite. I call them attacks because the experience is akin to being awoken from a sound sleep by a running chainsaw digging into the top front left or right quadrant of your head, including the eye, multiple times overnight.

I haven't found any medications that worked well enough to outweigh the side effects, so my only weapon is high flow oxygen as an abortive. Steroids left me loosing control of my limbs and walking much like someone with stereotypical Cerebral Palsy. This video is particularly intriguing in the discussion of the root cause because 5 of my 8 cervical discs were ruptured, not recently, but perhaps still relevant. It is certainly something worth looking into.

I'd appreciate any info or suggestions of avenues to pursue regarding what the connection between brain stem sensitization translates to treatment-wise.

I get these from 100s of different airborne triggers.

The researchers and treatment are lacking severely.

Doctor can you please look for me to antihistamines.

Antihistamines have helped in prevention a little

The other one that helps a little is Pregabalin, lyrica 450 mg at night

I'm lucky if I get a few months a year without them! When they started I had them for 14 months, 3 every day with huge palpitations, vomiting, and mood swings. They last 20 minutes minimum and 90 minutes maximum. I punch the wall they are so painful sometimes. I forget to breathe in the most extreme cases. My dad had them, grandparents, too, and my wife died after several years of them.

I've come to the conclusion that septic (very acidic or alkalotic) fluid is being forced up my neck, through my jaw, around my ear, through my temple and then finally over my eyebrow and down past my nose. While it travels, it hits the nerves and reacts with them causing HUGE amounts of pain. Unbearable pain. I've tried to commit suicide once which I guess is the mood-swing-related aspect but the headaches also have the nickname "suicide headaches" because they are so painful. When the fluid hits my ear it throws me off my feet or into furniture, but standing upright reduces the blood pressure making them slightly less painful so I grab hold of something. I take up to 480mg Propranolol a day otherwise the pain is constant, all day every day. Like a bolt from behind my nasal cavity up through the center of my head to my neocortex and up onto my scalp.

I've a suspicion you can catch this as when I met my wife she came down with the most horrible flu and from then on she had the headaches. Do not lay flat on your back if you can help it. The fluid will sit right over your backbone and it will eventually feel like you've been punched between the shoulder blades. Coincidentally, my wife went unconscious and eventually died from septic fluid penetrating her spine and making her brain and spinal fluid toxic. The doctors have an epidemic on their hands. I'm 100% sure of this. Some of the roots of my teeth have been dissolved by the fluid and shattered, that's how damaging and toxic it is. I think most of the conditions we suffer from, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, heart attacks, and cancer are caused by this fluid. We all just react differently depending on where this fluid settles in the body.

So I use propranolol to contain the elevated blood pressure and palpitations/random and huge heartbeat and reactions I get. The transition itself (cluster headache) I can neutralize within 4 minutes usually with a Triptan. This tightens the blood vessels in the brain allowing the fluid to drain off and pass quickly. Rizatriptan wafers, Zolmitriptan nasal sprays, or Zolmitriptan solid tablets work within 5 minutes for me. Instead of just accepting that this is happening, you must try to progress or halt it as quickly as possible. None of us know what else this fluid is damaging so nipping it in the bud as quickly as possible it 'vital'. I used to have 20/20 vision but both eyes dropped 20% when this started. My son lost 95% of the use of his left eye when he also started getting headaches.

If you get Zolmitriptan 'orodispersible' tablets prescribed tell the doctor you would rather have the solid tablets. The orodispersible had absolutely no effect on me. Good luck.
