I remember watching these videos as a medical student and Geeky Medics was actually just starting out. I've been a doctor for about 6 years now and use these videos every now and then for reference :). Thank you Geeky Medics for creating this great resource!

I think the sequence should be Inspection - Auscultation - Percussion/Palpation. Palpating prior to auscultation might distort bowel sounds. Also, it's recommended to ask the patient to bend the knees so that abdominal muscles are not tense. Writing these to help out other medical students out there! :)

A very informative video.
A suggestion: While palpating various organs, it would be great if you add the area of palpatation. Like for liver, you can add which intercostal space to palpate for.

I really like the example images. It really helps demonstrate what's normal and what's not.

Also, have the patient bend their knees up to prevent the abdominal muscles from contracting.

My professor emphasized that you should start abdominal auscultation first before palpation and percussion in case that tap on abdomen affect the movement of gastrointestinal tract then affecting the sound.

Question: How do you define increased bowel sounds?
Also, shouldn't auscultation be done before palpation or percussion for abdomen? (To prevent alteration in bowel sounds)

Thak you guys for the great work.

One thing i would do differently though is hearing for bowel sounds at the start and not at the end because all of these manouvers and palpations may temporarily alter bowel movement and thus give you a false positive.

Hello Geeky medics- when doing an abdominal exam, the sequence is different. Inspection, Auscultation, Percussion then Palpation.

Just a little detail, I'm a first-year medical student, halfway through my second term. But, we were taught that the first thing you have to do is auscultate bowel sounds. This is something my father, who has been a doctor for over forty years, agrees with. Is this somehow different in the way you were taught? It's not a critique, it's just a question.

I found this very helpful and useful especially those who will be taking OSCE this gives rationale behind everything being done. Great job!
