Meanwhile, Perseverance travels to an area which could hold clues about ancient life, captures a huge dust storm, and encounters a mishap so grave - it threatens to derail the main objective of the mission.

Using an aerial vehicle to accompany this rover was the best idea. If they could later find a more viable system to pair them autonomously, the aerial vehicle could be used as a scout in tandem with the rover. Largely to find those “dune” areas and plan a larger route to have less reliance on the rovers low sensor-range navigation.
