Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.

The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.

By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

I taught in a rural public school in western Oregon, Pleasant Hill High School, where I got to teach chemistry, physics, world history, Photography, Calligraphy, Latin, German, and Italian. I taught for 56 years and had a wonderful working life . . . .until the day I came and the people in the office told me I was retired. I'm only 77 now and miss teaching. But I will treasure forever the opportunity I had to teach these classes for half a century. If Hillsdale College can get MORE teachers out there to INSIST that they be allowed to teach for the WHOLE student and not just a very narrow listing of state curriculum, I am all in favor of it.
Not only is it better for the students, it will keep TEACHERS enthused about learning and having a hand on the future leaders of America. Keep it up! Richard Adams, Eugene, Oregon

The beautiful nature of a classical education makes me cry because I know I didn't get one, and neither did millions of other kids who went through the public school system.

a teacher from this college sent me this video and I started not to view it. I am so glad I did. To see the bright faces of racially diverse school room with the high academic standards Hillsdale is known for is very inspiring . The staff seemed so upbeat and dedicated and respectful.
