This is one of the worst artboxes for me. It's my kryptonite...

Check out my shop and other social media outlets for more of my art.

I use a black background. Please check out my upcoming vlog regarding lightfast testing of some of the watercolour paints I own

Your voiceover has to be the best thing I've ever watched on YouTube. 😻

Oil pastels are frustrating! And I hate canvas but...I loved the box and the art people are doing with it, fantastic. I use toned paper. The box I'm hating now is JUNE...did you see the comparison of basic vs premium? Is there a difference? Is it worth $10? No. And I am not huge on markers. So it's all what you personally like. The worst box ever was some December box (2018?) that was just a few cheap pencil. WORST ever.

I've been wanting to try a sketchbox for more than a year and finally bought this one. I was so disappointed! 😭😭 the contents didn't seem to be worth what I paid to get the box to Canada. And pastels are something I would never buy or use 😣

I also hate this box, and i used oil product regulary, i think the mix with the canva and the medium wasnt good. I am reassured to see that I am not the only one not to have appreciated the mix of this box.

I've always heard it pronounced Dosh as in rhymes with Josh, so that's how I pronounce it, but I can't guarantee that's right. 😂

I always appreciate when artists tell the truth about their struggles, I'd much prefer to hear the truth than "here's a picture that I managed to do in half an hour but we'll just ignore the struggling for hours behind the scenes . Good job with a product which is mainly for surrealism

nice landscape, even tho you hated the box
they are a nice brand of pastels but thats the problem with subscription boxes, you take the risk on the price of the supplies inside

The sign of a good artist is one who can take a medium they either hate or aren't comfortable with but use it anyway to create something awesome like you did. Kudos!

Ahaha! I understand the frustration! I've enjoyed my SketchBox, because even though I'm not always crazy about the specific materials, I like that they have tended to be cool items I wouldn't usually buy, and the quality is always great. Like, I have minimal experience with oil pastels, but I was thrilled to get those Senneliers! I also get the basic box, so we got the student grade Holbeins. If you want to send me your pastels, I will happily take them!

I predicted that this box would be pastels because we haven't had those in a while... but I was hoping for pan pastels or something like those great "soft" pastels we got last summer. But oil pastels... ugh, plus I don't know what to do with in this color palette! Oil pastels are not for detailed work, so the pieces I've seen that looked good are usually big. Maybe the artist sample they gave us was made on a larger surface? I have some pastel paper (that I usually use for soft pastels) so I'm hoping I can make something work on 9x12. I'm pretty sure anything I make on the canvases included in the box will look like children's drawing though! Your landscape looks great!

My box has been sitting for three days now. I'm scared to do anything with the pastels. 😬😬😬

I believe she’s a mixed media artist & im pretty sure she laid acrylics down first, then went in with the oil pastels cause I agree no way she did all that& I also believe that color shaper was total BS. Overall I did like the box this time even though I don’t think oil pastels are for me haha but you were on the right track! Defo tapped into your inner Bob Ross

I have a box of oil pastels I bought as a child with my birthday money, and I have yet to try them. I think I opened the box once, looked at them, and that was it. Fast-forward a few decades and I got into acrylics, graphite, ink and even dry pastels but never the oil pastels. I don't know why, I just....can't.

So I got this box yesterday and...sigh. I'll try, only because I really like the brands of the stuff (especially those Fredrix boards!) Been getting SketchBox for a few months and I've enjoyed building up my ink and pencil supplies. And I do appreciate the supplies that push me into creative discomfort sometimes. Sometimes.

Great reviews here, and diggin' your artwork. Subscribed!

This box would have been perfect for me, I've been trying to get into pastels after seeing some amazing tutorials.

Although it sucks that you didn't like the box, you ended up making an awesome video!

Oh my!! Well I thought you did ok with them. Oil pastels are an interesting medium for sure, I almost thought they were too soft. The student grade ones are easier to work with in my opinion. Anyway, I share your frustration when I get marker and pen boxes lol!

I love the landscape, you did a great job! I would have loved this box- I've been getting back into oil pastels this year. You can go over it with oil paints or water soluble oil pastels to get details, I can't get much detail with his the pastels either.

I can relate to the "I'm scared" part 🤣 this would be the first time I'm going to mess around with oil pastels since I've been avoiding them...
Anyways, that piece turned out amazing for being made with supplies you don't like. 😁

Great video and appreciate the honest review. I haven't received my box yet as it's still stuck at USPS but really excited for oil pastels even though they are unconventional. I haven't tried these brands yet but I have tried the cheaper brands and I've found they work really well on larger sheets of paper and you want to use them as if you are tackling one section at a time instead of building it all up as layers like you would for a painting. Feels odd to work that way since pastels aren't great at details like pencils and fine liners are but oddly working in sections like you would for copics I think works the best. Sad that you didn't find this enjoyable because I think one of your really cool trolls or goblins would look pretty epic with pastels. There's also fun etching you can do with a knife that can be a cool way to add details.
