“Because I don’t know how to properly use a tool I suggest you get one I do know how to use instead!” Lol

I can appreciate you enjoy using one over the other. I own both, just like you, and use both. The floppiness is an issue if you you push. It's like saying a cable is weak when you push on it. It's a pull saw. Pull. The Japanese make some of the finest furniture on our planet and they cannot be schmucks for using that style if saw. Use what you're used to, but buying a Japanese saw is by no means a bad choice.

Depends what your used to. I'd set the timber in a different position when using a pull saw. Enjoying your channel. Keep up the good work

There's nothing like those old saws with a nice heavy spine, you can let the saw do the work - and that handle design is the most comfortable I've ever used

That made me chuckle mate, as a 28 year old chippy apprentice your humour does make me laugh 😂

I used to think like you, but from watching Japanese carpenters on YouTube I'm emphasising the pull stroke. With practice I'm learning that the blade straightens on that pull stroke. I'm getting better.

It does follow the path of least resistance and only a couple taps of a chisel along your line will decrease that resistance easily.

As a die hard American made tools lover I gotta say once I finally set my American made pride aside and tried a real good Japanese pull saw my entire perspective and opinion on them vs western saws was changed immediately. It was a learning curve that took some practice and patience but I get 10x cleaner and accurate cuts with the pull saws and it takes far less time and energy cutting, but to each his own right? Use whatever works best for you

Well, the Japanese saw worked great when I sawed the legs from a table (to attach it 'floating' on a wall). It's flush, I couldn't have done it with a dovetail saw.

For most people, I'd agree with you. If you are used to using a western push saw, well, getting the technique right when using a Japanese style pull saw can be a challenge.
That said, it is not a binary choice: you can have both. I use a Japanese saw when I'm looking for a very thin kerf - say scribing around a radiator pipe when laying laminate flooring. The other element to using a push saw is, of course, technique. I notice you are trying to cut on both the forward and reverse stroke. Well, that is a recipe for disaster with a pull saw. The fact that they can be less than a millimetre thick, means they have absolutely no stability on the forward stroke, so will wander all over the place. That is why a Japanese carpenter will use a knife to make a guide for the saw to follow. Here, we tend to just mark the cut line with a pencil.
The other key to success with these wonderful tools is allowing the saw to do the work. Attacking the timber like you're trying to fell an oak is not going to result in a satisfactory outcome. As with all things: Practice makes perfect!

I have to say I love my pull saws you do have to pay attention while you cut and it’s a different way of cutting body position everything is different from western style saws but it’s what I could afford lol I’m looking for some nice backed western saws

That's what interdimentional tv would look like. It's a very good show!

Or if you just prefer japanese pull saws get a japanese Dozuki pull saw, they are basiclly the eastern counterpart of the western dovetail saw . The Dozuki pull saw also has a blade with a backspine so its less floppy and has much finer teeth for cutting joints !

Now you know, tooodalooo ! 😉

I realy enjoy these videos, as one of the most refined perfected tools in europe involve carpentry, woodcraft . Just think about the number of people in the past 10.000 years using tools to work wood . Create houses furniture, windmills, ships . The first industrial methods where made out of wood .

Just think about it, 10.000 years of history and comming up with specific tools for different jobs .
The experience, inovation and evolution that went in to these tools are insane .

It really just comes out to what you're more comfortable with. Some prefer to pull some prefer to push. Personally, I'm more accurate, faster and don't tire as easily with the Japanese pull saws but my fellows perform better with a western saw.

I greatly admire the skill of Japanese artisans. To know that they made do with inferior tools & inferior steel increases my admiration, but does not want me to get their tools.
