In this video Leah explains the intricacies of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in the context of VA disability ratings. She clarifies that IBS, a functional gastrointestinal disorder, often requires a diagnosis of exclusion, and mentions the Rome criteria used in its diagnosis. Leah categorizes IBS into three types: IBS-C (constipation), IBS-D (diarrhea), and IBS-M (mixed), and discusses its potential connection to military service either on a primary or secondary basis. She particularly notes its prevalence among Gulf War veterans. Regarding the VA disability rating, she states that IBS can be rated at 0%, 10%, or 30%, with 30% being the highest. This highest rating is given for severe symptoms like constant abdominal pain, alternating diarrhea and constipation. Leah emphasizes the importance of the Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) in assessing these conditions and suggests her other videos for further guidance, especially on IBS secondary to PTSD.

Why wont my va physician ever render a diagnosis for anything? I've been complaining about this for months, and still no diagnosis. I've just now gotten a consult for gastro, but gosh it's soon aggravating

A little off topic but please pass along to all Cold War vets. There is a bill in Congress H.R. 5757 Cold War Service Medal Act, that has languished in the House for several years. This bill would pass into law an official medal for all Cold War vets not just a commemorative medal issued by various veteran’s organizations. Please write or call your representatives to get this bill passed and honor the millions of vets who served during this overdue honor passed.

I have had wicked IBS ever since I left the Navy in '92. I have had many GI visits and get colonoscopies every 3 years as I produce adenomas (bad polyps). The problem is that it was NOT dx while in service. I am only rated for tinnitus, PTSD & allergic rhinitis at this point. I can't figure out how to submit a claim for IBS and suspect it's related to Gulf War Syndrom/toxin exposure.

Is there anyway to get above a 30%? I have IBS at 30% and have submitted a claim for diverticulitis (secondary to IBS) which has very serious symptoms. If the diverticulitis is rated alone, I would likely be at 60% or higher.

I have had IBS-D since the 80s. I went to the military clinic numerous times. They did not give a diagnosis. Military doctors will not give a metabolic diagnosis, because it will make the soldier non-deployable. A medical discharge is likely to occur.

DBQ KNEE AND LOWER LEG CONDITIONS
DBQ ANKLE CONDITIONS
DBQ Foot Conditions including Flat foot (Pes Planus)
I have c&p exam for all these. Do all these get lumped together in one rating?

I issued a claim for an increased percentage from 0% for IBS-C. The claim came back denied and remained with a 0% rating even with my doctor’s opinion of ‘moderately to severe IBS-C with daily burden symptomatology.’ I also stated the same symptomatology in the C&P exam. I do not understand why they kept me at 0% instead of better rating. Not only did I submit the doctor letter but other types of testing and documentation that support my claim. Perhaps the rater did not see the doctor letter. What should I do in this case where I have all my documentation and met the criteria for at least 10% and they still continue to keep me in the same percentage 0%?

If I am rated 10% disability for gastrointestinal disease due to being hospitalized in Saudi Arabia in 1991 in tent city for two nights. Since I’ve returned I’ve had gastrointestinal issues. I’ve had multiple tests done over the years to include recently. I put in an intent to file increase because the episodes are more frequent and severe. I have been diagnosed with Epigastric pain, Gerd, IBS and gallstones (next they want to remove my gallbladder giving me a 50/50 chance of some relief. I went to my private doctor and got an updated diagnosis of IBS.
I’m stuck on if I should be filing for IBS as a primary from my gulf war gastrointestinal disease or continue with my intent to file increase for the gastrointestinal disease. Also, would IBS be a secondary to the gastrointestinal disease? Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Leah. I was deployed to Bahrain in 1997 and Kuwait in 1998. Do you think I would fall into the presumptive category with those Deployments for IBS? I also suffer from hemroids. Would hemroids qualify as presumptive also under functional gastrointestinal disorders and gulf war service? Does your company offer diagnostic services or just nexus letters after a diagnosis is obtained from another doctor? Thank you.

I have just been diagnosed with Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). I have a 30% IBS rating. I'm curious if you know if EPI can be a secondary condition to IBS? Thank you!

Just came to your video, I just went to the cnp and the examiner just asked me 2 questions, drew blood for god knows what and called it a day. Is this part of the exam, or did i just get a bad examiner?

Wife has IBS as a result of being required to take 5 antihistamines a day related to her primary diagnosis of chronic urticaria. Can she claim IBS due to the medication? Her constipation is so bad she sometimes goes 5-6 days without a bowl movement and horrible pain. Our doctor said its related to the antihistamines.
