The Radio City Rockette Dancer's Rules Are More Strict Than You Could Ever Imagine. From Those High Kicks to Intense Rehearsals...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since 1933, spectators in search of holiday cheer have descended on New York City's Radio City Music Hall to watch the Rockettes perform in their iconic Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Eighty-six years later, the training and precision required of the show's dancers are as rigorous as ever—that much is evident just by watching their famous kick line. The elite group of 80 women chosen to be New York City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall each year, perform as many as four shows in a day during the busy season, with television appearances, photo shoots and hours upon hours of rehearsal time sprinkled in -- all while maintaining the poise of a professional dancer and a smiling face.

But what are these elusive women really like? You know, when the curtain goes down and they hang up their (eight) elaborate costumes for the day? The intense and demanding rehearsal schedule is enough to keep a few of us mere mortals away from trying to become on of the uniformed dancers. Not to mention the fact that they have to maintain those perfect figures year-round, and they have be prepared to re-audition every single year. Yes, these dancers are covered in sparkly outfits with big smiles on their faces and are probably full of Christmas cheer, but they truly are athletes. The Rockettes are known for their unbelievable precision with their dance routines, to the point that it’s almost militant. Hard work, a grid system to map out their performances, and a coveted spot in this historical dance company equals the life of a Radio City Rockette.

The fact that the dance moms girls were working more hours than them that is not right

I have a good friend who has done the summer intensive 5 times and open auditions 3 times! Hoping she makes it someday, I’ll be there to see her show for sure!

I was surprised that they don’t actually link arms in their high kicks! 😲😍

One of our dancers from our studio attended the Summer intensive and she tried out and made the team and has been a RCR for the last three years. Her name is Nadia and it’s easy to pick her out because she has beautiful red hair. With all that she does, she comes home to Ohio and gives her to the studio with the little ones and helps the older girls with their solos. She is truly amazing! Although I did not see her in this video. We love you Nadia!!!!

I'd love to see a reality show following a Rockette for a season. It looks intense, but so much fun!

Dammit. I'm too short....
and too old..
and too fat...
and can't kick higher than my other ankle ...

There goes another career choice.

A former rockette was a tap teacher at my studio and she choreographed dances with kick lines in them. You can't actually put your hands on the backs of the people next to you because the strength of the arm can push you forward and make the line all wonky. Another little fun fact, if one person trips and falls in the kick line, the whole line goes down like dominoes

The saddest part about this is that I’m to short to be one of them😭

I had a dancer friend who made it into the Rockettes after dreaming about it since she was small; saw her years later and she said she absolutely hated it and left after a couple of years. Since everyone had to look the same, the underlying need for individuality turned into jealousy.☀️

most of the ‘rules’ are just general dance rules, whether you’re a rockette or you’re in a small studio

I was fortunate to have seen the Radio City Christmas Show and let me tell you, these women are spot on and flawless throughout the entire show. It amazes me how precise every move they make is and now I know why after seeing this video. A wonderful show that I suggest everyone sees.

My dance studio produced a couple rockettes. It looks glamorous but it’s really hard work for not a lot of money. That much stress on your joints in heels, dancing at special events on concrete, can lead to injury. There’s also regional squads of rockettes, not just the NYC ones, and they do even more.

Actually quite similar to the disciplines of The Ohio State University Marching Band - similar practice hours during the season, having to audition every year, teaching at summer sessions, precise body positioning, being always-on-the-clock brand ambassadors - all with the same goal in mind: absolute perfection in performance.

My cousin did the summer intensives and tried out at least two times, but was not picked. It's really tough! She ultimately found joy in teaching dance. Hey, I admire her for having the guts to get out there and try! She can say she really did try at the end of the day!

Auditioned and even took their workshop, but never made it. No regrets.
