You're overcomplicating the situation. Just because it can dock wirelessly it doesn't render the console useless or not "portable". The Wii U failed because the gamepad was just a controller not a full fledged system. So it can still be used portably when not docked and when docked its an additional controller with a screen which is cool. It's also 2024 the technology has probably improved a ton since the Wii U so the connectivity of the device to the dock will probably have a better range and lower latency. You could probably still dock the system on the docking port and enhance the capability of the system since it will stay plugged into power. If 3rd party companies decide to just make it a second screen I wouldn't mind either, I remember when I used to play Cod with my brother and we would each have our own screen on the Wii U days so no one can screen peak.

I really hope this is real. I dont understand how this would be restrictive at all. I think people are confused about what this is describing.

This idea has already been present in smart phones for years, it's called screen casting. Hell, Nintendo even showed it in the Wii U concept trailer at E3 2011.

Basically what this would look like:

> playing Mario Kart 8 handheld
>cast screen to TV
>game streams to TV directly from handheld device, handheld screen becomes secondary display

It's really not that hard to picture, this has basically already existed for years now.

I was thinking it’s a “3DS” shaped switch then you can fold it and dock it which would then include another screen for dock mode like the game pad or it’s just a magnetic screen for the switch so it can be removed in doc mode or clipped for portable mode.

Maybe the switch can also go sideways with magnetic joy cons on the long axis to make it DSable 🤙🏻

I would actually love if Nintendo took a Dual Screen approach with the Switch 2 again like they did on the Wii U. I've been playing Splatoon since it came out on the Wii U, then skipped out on Splatoon 2 because I couldn't afford a switch until Splatoon 3 was already announced, at which point I just waited for that to release. But one thing that still bugs me about Splatoon 2 and 3 is that the superjumps aren't as easy to quickly do as they were on the Wii U. And also the removal of one of the Specials where you could fire a big Rocket of Ink anywhere on the map via the Gamepad's touchscreen was also saddening to see. If they really pull this off again, I hope they return these small quality of life features to Splatoon 4.

Edit: also it wouldn't be that difficult to make games work with both a Dual Screen aswell as a Single Screen setup. Good examples are The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (I haven't played Twilight Princess HD, but I'd imagine it's similar) and also Splatoon 2/3 compared to Splatoon 1 (while I still prefer the control setup of Splatoon 1, Spatoon 2 and 3 play perfectly fine with just one screen) aswell as the other numerous ports of Wii U games to Switch (or even other systems, like Lego City Undercover)

So I'd imagine that if they really do pull this off, they learned enough from both the Wii U and the Switch to optimize their games for both Dual Screen aswell as Single Screen gameplay.

No love for the originator of this theory (me) lol. Been saying this concept in yt comments for over a month now.

I mean what if the purpose of this is to allow us to play past games on NSO. It wasn't just the Wii U that used a dual screen.

I almost all the time played Wii U as a portable system. I used the gamepad as the only screen to play.

I’d like a built in capture card and more power but I love the switch I don’t really want it to end.

If true, here’s how it could possibly work out for Nintendo:

They don’t make a big deal of it. They don’t treat it as a selling point, just something extra that the device can do.

They either don’t include dual-screen features in new games at all, or it doesn’t add anything that you can’t already do in the game. Like at most it’s a map or menu without sacrificing the ability to use those things regularly on the big screen. Again, just don’t make it a big deal, at least not initially at release.

The only exceptions? Ports from their previous dual-screen consoles, but even those must be outfitted for single-screen play. A Link Between Worlds, for instance, doesn’t really need a second screen in a port, it has plenty of unused buttons that could be used to bring up the menu, but the option is there if you want it.

If this makes it sound superfluous that’s fine, if it’s a feature that people say they want to see used more, *then* they expand on it a little. But the Switch 2 is going to have advantages over the Wii U whether it has dual screen functionality or not. Even the difference of the Switch 2 having better battery life and portability over the game pad gives it an advantage here. Nintendo just has to let the Switch 2 define itself by its unique strengths as and avoid the perception of being Wii U2

i think it's a good idea; it will add a dual screen feature which can be an awesome thing for certain games; esp if it is optional for every game

Essentially Fusing the 3DS and Switch… you can have the console be the style of the 3DS and have the dock make it more enhanced and connect to a TV.. this might actually be the correct way to go, but how big would it be portably. there’s a few questions that need answers though.

If this were to have 2 screens, how would the body of the Switch 2 look? Would the top screen rotate to allow you to fold it down? Would Nintendo have essentially made their own variant of the Samsung Z Fold, where it has a flexible screen on the inside that works as 2 screens, with another screen on the back of the top half of the device that's usable when "streaming" to a tv? Would the XDS incidentally become a real thing?

This would also open the possibility of playing DS games again. Add the fact that joy-cons have motion controls, and this new console could essentially be all 7 previous consoles, Game Boy and DS rolled into one.

I think this could be a decent side feature if they make it where its just the original switch is used as the pad for switch 2.

I think I remember someone saying something that Nintendo is probably throwing rumors out there to make things harder to predict

This is actually my biggest hope for Switch 2. It clears the way for flawless DS, 3DS, and Wii U remakes/NSO releases, which makes perfect business sense and is an obvious next step in their recent strategy. It could also carry over to portable mode either through a peripheral, or if the actual console has something similar to that triple screen clamshell design seen in a patent a while back. Maybe this is what Wind Waker HD has been waiting for?

I always thought it would be interesting if the Switch's display could be used while docked. Not necessarily streaming, but while it's docked, be still able to access the screen similar to a DS. The main things would occur on the TV, but the switch's touchscreen would let you pick shortcuts, show a mini-map, etc.

2 screens. Switch attach. And 3d removable clam shell design! Its going to be awesome!

It may be due the dock having an eGPU in it, which allows for 4k gaming or at least 4k upacaling. Then, in handheld mode, it is backed down to 1080p FHD. That is more likely. I can not see them going backwards. It just would make NO sense. I mean look at the Wii U; it did not work for sales, but it was a step forward and gave us the Switch. The secondary screen caused people to say that they wished that was portable AND Nintendo originally wanted that to be the case. Technology just was not there yet. So, why would they suddenly go backwards. eGPUs are a step forward for them. The only issue could be games not being designed properly to work in both modes and could cause a similar issue to development as the Wii U. As far as developers having trouble with making it work properly, not them not knowing what to do with it; like the case with the Wii Us gamepad. Just a thought.
