Hello. Welcome to UK HealthCare's virtual tour of our Birthing Center. As a baby-friendly designated hospital, we want you and your baby to have the best possible start.

If you arrive in labor, you can pull around the semi-circle of Pavilion A of UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital and let our security guard know you need to get to the Birthing Center. The guard will instruct you where to park, so you and your partner can come in together.

Our Birthing Center has its own OB Express Elevator. It's in the back of the Kentucky Children's Hospital lobby. Take the OB Express Elevator and go straight to our Birthing Center check-in. We will then take you to Birthing Center Triage. At this time, your partner should move the car to the parking structure on Transcript Avenue, usually within about 20 minutes of your arrival in triage.

To get to the OB Express Elevator from the parking garage, take the Pedestrian Bridge from level C of the garage to the first floor of Pavilion A. The OB Express Elevator also stops at the Kentucky Children's Hospital lobby on the first floor.

If you think you are in labor or have any problems during your pregnancy, you can come to the Birthing Center Triage to be assessed. If you are in labor, we will move you to a room on our Labor and Delivery Unit.

Here is one of our private labor and delivery rooms. As you can see, there is also a sleep area for your partner in care.

We have many things to help you manage your labor. A few of these features include exercise balls, peanut balls, a portable tub, and portable monitors. Additionally, all of our rooms have showers. We also have 24-hour anesthesia services if you choose an epidural.

If you write out a birth plan, share this with your provider and bring a copy for the nurses. You're welcome to adjust our lights, bring a diffuser, or a playlist to make yourself more comfortable.

Please let us know how we can help you feel more at ease. Your partner in care and two others may visit during your labor and postpartum stay. One partner in care may spend the night with you. If you have other children, they may visit. If you have a doula, they do not count as one of your visitors.

Once your baby is born, we will place your child on your chest, skin to skin and belly to belly with you. We call this kangaroo care. And it helps you bond with your baby. If you plan to breastfeed, this is a great way to get started.

There is a recess room attached to every labor room, where we will weigh and measure your baby after birth. Your partner can come with your baby and take pictures.

We will give your child a medical record number. It will be on the bracelet your baby will wear throughout your hospital stay. You and your partner will also wear a bracelet with this number. If, for any reason, we have to take my baby from your room, we will have you read this number when we return to make sure it's your baby. We also have safety sensors and limit the staff who can be part of your care team.

If you have to have a cesarean section, this will take place in one of the Birthing Center's three operating rooms. After your surgery, you will go to our Recovery Room for about two hours. There, you and your baby can practice skin to skin and breastfeeding. Then, you will all move together to our Mother and Baby Unit. You will spend two days with us in our Mother and Baby Unit if you have a vaginal delivery and three days in this unit if you have a cesarean section.

Our private rooms have a sleep couch or a second bed where your partner in care can sleep, as well as a crib for your baby. We will provide everything you and your baby need, just bring comfortable clothes to wear during your stay and an outfit for your baby to wear home.

Here's your baby's crib, where your child will sleep during your stay. We practice rooming in, which means we try to keep your baby in the room with you as much as possible. This will let you see early signs that your baby is getting hungry. And you can learn to care for your baby with our help.

Our nurses have been specially trained to help you breastfeed. And our lactation consultants will see you during your stay. We also have a special clinic to support your breastfeeding after you go home, our Mommy and Me Clinic.

Every day on our Mother and Baby Unit, we have a quiet time between 1:00 and 3:00 PM, where we will give you time with your baby and family without interruptions. Our goal is to give you and your family the best possible start while doing what we can to help.

If your baby needs higher level care, we have a Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU. One of only two in the state. Our NICU has state-of-the-art private care rooms, where you can stay with your baby.

We will teach you how to care for your newborn. We will give you materials to help you remember what you've learned once you are at home. Let others help you at home. Rest. And give yourself time to get to know your new family member.
