I´ve got a Synology myself, bt the only problem I see here, is that you alone are responsible for everything. If you misconfigure your network or security settings, malware can find its way onto your NAS and encrypt all your stuff especially if your NAS is "always on". If you f.. up your filesystem, your files can be corrupted or are simply gone; if the drives fail, your files are gone too. If you have a mediaserver running, your NAS will never be in sleep mode and that cant be good in the long term. So, as much as I´m interested in having control over my data and be able to have it all in my personal network, i fear the moment I make a major mistake and my stuff is at a risk. So the most important things like photos, password container, keys, etc. are still backed up (encrypted) in the cloud additionaly.

Absolutely awesome video. The DS923+ is the perfect NAS for anyone that wants to get away from paying another company to spy on your data. It's about time that everyone wants to own their data!

Started with a DS918+ back in 2020 and now rocking a DS1821+ to future proof it with more bays and expandability. One of the best things I've bought. Self-hosting as much things as I can. Mostly used for Plex streaming and data storage and backing up.

This was a great video. Wasn’t aware of this product. It looks really useful and helpful

I use a 2nd Synology, 2 bay (cheapest) unit for backup of my 5 bay synology. Hyper Backup does it real easily. You control what's backed up; of course all data files are not handled, but config files and the like are.

Was expecting at least one small discussion of where privacy concerns have been exposed/breached, which was the main factor preventing me from taking the Synology NAS plunge; Sad to see none featured, but a good overall discussion nonetheless. Tq.
---UPDATE:--- I tried to find what I thought was some discussion of data breaches but I couldn't find the YouTube video that I came across this 'news' and any article on data breach was imho quite minor so I think it fair to say Synology probably is highly secure (data breaches due to users poor configuration)

Great video. You mention that you like to keep your devices clean and store files only on the NAS. Do you have any guides or links I can check out for how to accomplish this? Thanks!

I've been searching for a while, but haven't found a good answer so far, and this seems to be the perfect video to ask: can anyone recommend software that runs on a Laptop/Pi and acts like Google Drive/Dropbox, with basic streaming capabilities? I've been meaning to create a storage/basic streaming station for my network for a while now, but so far all I've found are either way over the top media servers connecting online to get metadata, or way too simple FTP'esque servers. The perfect software for me in this case, client wise, would be to just type something on the address bar, see my files and have the option to either play/see them on the browser or download them.

Sorry if this seems lazy of me, but, again, I've been searching for a while and really have no clue where to turn to

Been using Synology NASs for over 10 years now. Did you setup mirrored disks and have you looked at the built in firewall? For media the Jellyfin server in Docker is epic 🎉

At this price point (around 600 EUR where I live), wouldn't it make more sense to just build a small form factor pc with 4 drives and 1 ssd?

So...a giant HD? BTW when will your course be updated for 2023? Or should we just sign up for coaching?

I am at 10:23 yet, but i have to write: if it is only on the NAS, that is not backed up! Yes 2-4 disks are in the device, and data is redundant on those, but if the NAS dies and corrupts the data, that data gone.
Combined with the video editing issue: LLT has a video about sinology, when they can set up folders, to connect two NAS together, to be the backup of the other. (So the problem above solved)
Also if those are connected those can sync the files in a given folder (so the editor can edit locally, and before and after the 2 nas can finish the datatransfer between them over night).

Have you ran Wireshark and checked for telemetry being sent off-site?
