It's rare to see someone show their screw ups without being embarrassed about it.It shows your humility and good character.Thanks.

Thanks for leaving the mistake in. A man of character!

Foil’s a great idea! KEY: Fine-tuning shim height to avoid problems with the saddle height worm screws. [Edited to change “shin” to “shim!”]

Thank you for the tips, the aluminum foil wedge I did worked wonders for my cheap old Chinese(?) Squier (which is probably worth about as much as a couple of StewMac's shims.)

Cut pieces from a deck of cards to tilt the neck. Place a longer piece of card first and a shorter piece of a card in the end that needs to be tilted up. Cards are stiff, thin and made out of paper which is made out of wood.

Well done on leaving in the mistake - makes it more human!

I like to use sheet metal. I cut a rectangular of thin sheet metal, notch it out to acomodate the lower pocket screws. File edges smooth if necessary. Works every time and better than paper, cardboard, etc.

I usually use brass shims or wooden ones and my Univox Hi-Fliers usually need at least a .50

But I’ll keep foil wrap in mind next time I only need to use a thinner shim.

I have been stockpiling old credit cards that I can cut up though if needed lol

Here are some tips: 1. use a capo at the first fret to hold the strings, no need to take the bridge off to shim the neck - just leave it. 2. When shim the pocket, can make your own "wedge" by putting more material in the back than in the front, depending on what material you are shimming with (string paper, match cover, cereal box, business cards etc.) so put two layers in back and one in front to create the wedge.

You can also make a shim out of paper tape or painters tape by overlapping strips to make a contour effect from thick to thin.

Cool idea with the foil, did it work for you. I put capo in the 1st fretvand take the neck off like that, the strings do misbehave but you lear best by trial and error.

I use 5 or 6 stripes of velcro from 1st fret to middle pickup area. Strings are secured and easy to handle.

That must have been frustrating. I like that natural finish. Nice work!

I use a similar method, but I put the tin foil on an anvil and hammer the $hit out of it. That way the foil is already compressed and won't fluctuate after you put the neck on.

I would like to shim my neck too, do you think it will remove some buzz after the 12 fret, it only buzz on bendings because it has 7.25 radius.

I have had the string flip thing happen, too. Very confusing when it happens.

get painters tape go around the neck stick it to the strings then take off neck you'll never have that problem again, also the painters tape wont ruin the finish once you take it off
